I  Sebelius

I think Obama may piss off Hillary supporters even more if he picks a woman VP that isn't her

That depends. Do Clinton's feminist-motivated supporters want to break the glass ceiling for women, or just for her alone?

I like Sebelius a lot. She has been a good governor for my home state. Unfortunately, because of term limits we will lose her at the end of this term. In terms of assets she could bring to the Obama ticket. They "click" in terms of political philosophy. She is smart and would bring experience to the ticket. All pluses.

On a superficial level, she is attractive, well dressed and a whopping DUD as a public speaker. Zero charisma. I was shocked. She is wooden and makes unnatural hand gestures.

Another woman that should not be ruled out is Governor Claire McCaskill of Missouri. Same assets, a swing state, and much more engaging on the stump. As a native Jayhawker-it kills me to say it-but she would be a better choice.

I like Claire McCaskill a lot, but there are two huge problems with choosing her. First, it's likely her seat would fall back into Republican hands if there is a special election next spring. The Dems in Missouri aren't deep enough to keep that seat if McCaskill becomes the next Veep. (Same applies to Webb in Virginia.) Second, one of Obama's biggest vulnerabilities is his short resume as an elected official. McCaskill's is even shorter. It would magnify the problem for both.

Sebelius is not a great stump speaker, but you don't need that with Obama at the top of the ticket. Sebelius is a very good retail-level politician, especially when she's campaigning in Republican areas. She's also great with reporters and you can't overstate how important that is.

Sebelius has been my top pick from the beginning of this. I think she'd be the smartest choice Obama could make. The only major downside I see is that because she'll be 60 this year she probably won't be a strong candidate for president in 2016 if Obama gets two terms.

In that light Janet Napolitano (age 51 in November) might be a better pick, but that might be too much for Bill and Hillary Clinton to endorse since they launched her career into politics.

@ stormfree (re: Can't we all WORK together?)

But I don't get this current argument that they have to LIKE each other. Johnson and Kennedy hated each other. This isn't highschool.

I don't think you want to use the example of Kennedy and Johnson unless you want Hillary to be a VP whose only job is attending funerals.

I don't think this road will get you anywhere. Even if you put aside the rhetoric of the campaign, there are big problems with Hillary Clinton on a national ticket. (Starting with the six-figure bribes her brothers took at the end of Bill's second term to introduce people who wanted pardons. That's a killer by itself. Obama didn't touch it in the primaries, but the Republicans will not be so discreet.)

But if you do insist in pursuing this, you might want to find out first just what kind of role Barack Obama has in mind for his Vice President. You guys are presuming that Obama will give his VP a strong policy role in his administration like Bill Clinton and Bush 43. So far as I know, Obama has said nothing about what he wants is VP to do.

Given how the Bush administration has used the Vice Presidency as its black ops center, I think it is highly likely that the next president will pull back from the Clinton and Bush model.
