Priorities

Of course our Justice department can find the time to convene a Grand Jury to pursue technical violations involving an affair. However, they are just too busy to prosecute our war criminals who ordered torture and renditions. I am saddened by what this says about our country.

Great Post

Rather than Madame Guillotine, maybe we can just introduce Monsieur Wealth Tax to redistribute some of the ill-gotten gains of post-Reagan America. Of course, probably the only way to get our bought and paid for congress to take such a bold step would be to threaten them with some (figurative) beheading.

Thanks, Bigguns

I thought I was the only person alive who thinks it is immoral to own multiple houses in a country with millions of homeless people and even more on the brink.

We still have a manufacturing base?

"...it will become easier to see just what remains of our manufacturing base."

I didn't know whether to laugh of cry when I read this. So many of the companies my friends and their parents worked for in CA in the mid and late 20th century are long gone that I'm not sure what we still make here anymore. As a current resident of Eugene, OR, the only manufacturing base that I have seen any evidence of lately is glass blowing (pipes and bongs). So many of the companies my friends and their parents worked for in CA in the mid and late 20th century are long gone that I'm not sure what we still make here anymore.

If we stopped trading for a few years, would we starve to death or would we rediscover our can-do attitude? I wonder.

Next up

I just can't wait for the wingnuts to scream and holler because our President supports people's right to say offensive things. Obviously, such support for offensive speech means he does not support America.

Born of the Enlightenment

America is a child of the Age of Enlightenment. This Age stands in contrast to the Dark Ages in two intertwined respects: A determination to independently determine the nature of the universe through the scientific method and a rejection of the faith and hierarchies of the church-dominated Dark Ages. In order to come into existence, America had to turn her back on religion. How else could the revolutionaries have fought against a divinely chosen king?

We're all scared, but Obama may well be a coward

During the campaign, a Nader supporter made a video wherein he went hunting for "Obama-nuts". He still hasn't found them. This President has no balls whatsoever. Torture? No Prosecutions. War? Keep killing and dying for nothing. Fourth Amendment? Forget about it. Forget about prosecutions of those who violate it as well. Insolvent mega-banks? Nationalization is off the table. And don't even start on his lack of viable energy use/climate change actions. It's as though he is certain everything will work out if he just avoids any errors of commission and feels he won't be held responsible for any errors of omission.

Thanks, GuyHHD

It is really nice to see someone on Salon mention that climate change is a much more serious threat than most people seem willing to appreciate and that market solutions are just not going to cut it. For instance, if we rely on pricing energy up to a level that would allow us to continue to thrive on this planet, how do we reconcile the need to reduce emissions by 80-90% over the next one to two decades with the fact that people responsible for over 20% of our emissions are immune to such price increases?

During WWII nearly every American believed we were fighting for our very survival. Even so, we did not rely on voluntary reductions in fuel and food consumption in order to make these supplies available to the troops. We RATIONED both fuel and food. Climate change dwarfs war as a threat to our nation. In fact, it is a threat to our life form. We could ration both fuel and grid power tomorrow if we were not a nation of narcissistic children. I'm sure most folks will mention all of the downsides to reducing our emissions to sustainable levels, but I just want to mention one upside: if you move your fat ass, it ceases to be a fat ass.

Those who do not learn from history

Only a handful of the Republican crooks in the '70s were prosecuted, so in the '80s they brought on Iran-Contra; we also had a sitting Vice President intervene to stop a prosecution of his son (W.) for insider trading. After staging a coup d'etat in 2000, they were emboldened even further. Extrapolations are risky, but I fear there will be nothing left of our Constitution if we allow them to go unpunished yet again.

@ Timothy 3

"I suspect, why this profile doesn't include "any evaluation of Geithner's actual policy proposals," is simply due to the lack of coherency from Treasury."

I beg to differ. Geithner has rewrapped the same fecal matter with different bows at least three times. He clearly believes that he is playing basketball without a shot clock, has the lead and just needs to run out the clock for victory. Unfortunately for the home crowd, he has misread the score. We're losing (our standard of living and maybe our nation). We need bold action by the administration for people who don't measure their wealth in eight or nine figures. This administration has a lot of very smart people; I just hope they find enough wisdom to help secure us some sort of future.
