Maybe the best option for this, and most if not all other Bush/Cheney attrocities, is lots and lots of sunshine.
Don't prosecute, give everyone immunity in a patriotic effort to get to the whole truth.
Once the public, especially those 'low-information' voters, sees the truth--endorsed by their own past leaders--the neo-Con/Republican brand will stink. Forever.
I have to (politely!) disagree with some of what I've read here--I think it was commendable for Joan to have gone on O'Reilly.
Those who watch O'Reilly, and Fox in general, rarely see anyone articulate enough to present the other side of the story. Instead Fox tends to get weakly spoken wishy-washy types (Colmes, Juan Williams) to put forth as absolute examples of the liberal/progressive side.
So Fox viewers get the message that the other side is weak and inarticulate, unable to defend liberal/progressive thoughts and policies. This makes the Fox conservatives seem that much more knowledgable and (to their viewers) correct.
More smart articulate folks from the liberal/progressive side should go on Fox, if only to let their viewers know that there is another side to the story.
If I have any constructive criticism (and it seems Joan already realizes this) it is that she, and others, should point out the rhetorical devices that the Fox hosts use so that the normal (!) Fox viewer begins to understand how they are manipulated.
As an example, several times O'Reilly would distort Joan's views and then attack the distortion (straw man). Joan never pointed this out. Fox/O'Reilly likes to construct an argument as having only two sides, good vs. evil, and then asks the viewers whether they support good or evil. These rhetorical devices need to be called out.
We've all seen through history that you can't change the other side's views if you just leave them alone.
Either we need to intermarry with Fox employees, or we need to educate their viewers.
Integrity is when you are consistent--when you live the way you ask others to live. Respect is understanding that others have a right to their opinion.
Like most people, I value Integrity and Respect.
Which is why I value you, Joan, because you had the Integrity to stick to your beliefs (and even understand that maybe they need to be thought about) and you had the Respect to try and discuss the issues calmly.
But these values are sorely lacking in many when it comes to the abortion issue.
How do you have Integrity when you say you value human life but are for a War?! How can you be anti-abortion but pro-death penalty?! If one values Life, you should value all Life.
How do you have Respect for others when you shout them down (with words, or with boldface)?! When you never listen to them, or accept that they might have a point?!
If anyone, much less Christians, really acted like Jesus supposedly taught--in their personal lives, in their business lives, in their political lives--then I'd be happy.
Would Jesus have been pro-Iraq War? Would Jesus own any guns? Would Jesus support the death penalty? Would Jesus be trying to get rich?
One problem with abortion in this country is that it's very difficult to Respect the religious since they have no Integrity.
I think that if the Christian/Religious Right crowd were anti-death penalty, anti-War, anti-gun, anti-poverty...in short, if they were truly Pro-Life, they'd have won their abortion fight.
But when you say you're Pro-Life, and then fight against good healthcare, fight against worker rights, fight for guns, fight for war, fight for the death penalty, etc., well....
