  • Not all Indians

[Read the article: Indian society still doesn't think much of girls]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Aborting female fetuses has been going on in India for several years. However, even within India there are vast regional variations; the ratio of live births for boys:girls is close to normal in West Bengal (and I believe some of the southern states). This does reflect the differences in how women/girls are viewed in Bengal vs other states. Girls are not preferred, but they're not hated. Perhaps this tolerance is a result of lower dowry requirements in Bengal (although dowries are illegal throughout the country). A few years ago there was an article by Amartya Sen in the New Republic with more details than I can give. I can say that both my cousins in West Bengal India are the proud fathers of intelligent, and much loved daughters.

  • Xenophobic and unfunny

[Read the article: Them damn pictures]

    Hey Doug:

I think it's interesting that you're defending these cartoons. I saw them and found them to be xenophobic and unfunny; exactly like your "Ryder Truck" cartoon. Of course, I'm seeing it from the perspective of a brown-skinned woman (tho not a muslim). Would you find it funny if someone drew pictures of pasty-skinned, no-lipped, blonde, blue-eyed types and how this 2% of the world's population has committed grievous acts of violence and colonialism all over the world and continues to shove their world-view down everyone's throats? Do I think you should kill people or declare fatwas against these ignorant racists? NO.

  • Patricia what are you talking about?

[Read the article: Them damn pictures]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I said I totally disagree with the cartoons, but I realize that people have the right to say what they want. These cartoons HAVE been published on the web -- so how am I not supporting the decision to publish them. You sound like a Republican twat, and yes we do have the government you deserve!

  • Girls toys sucked!!!!!

[Read the article: Boring girl toys]

Always have probably always will. I'll never forget the X-mas I wanted a microscope and got Barbie jet thingy? What the fuck?

  • John Roberts

[Read the article: Wait, you mean we didn't find any WMD?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Aren't there any rules about news organizations having to report the truth. In medical journals you can adverts that look like a journal article but have to have the word "Advertisement" stamped on every page. Maybe the MSM needs a little stamp "Propangda" when journalists speak, so the audience knows what they're getting.

Oh as an FYI "John Roberts" used to be a dj for a top 40 station (1050 CHUM) in Toronto, so I'm not sure what his training is!!

  • Everyone should be afraid

[Read the article: Who's afraid of the big bad gay marriage amendment?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Even though most of the posters on this site are aware that this is just a diversion from the mess the Republicans have created, I'm scared that a lot of people will get diverted and stop paying attention to all the truly important issues!

  • What evidence do you have?

[Read the article: Ban on gay marriage denies justice to children]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Furthermore, if the courts should encourage marriages that help kids, why aren't the courts supporting the more-likely-to-be-stable relationships of gay couples?"

What statistics show that same sex relationships are more stable than heterosexual relationships?

That said, stability of relationships shouldn't enter into this argument. The argument really is just if 2 consenting adults want to be together they should have that right along with the legal responsibilities of marriage. I don't really understand legal jargon very well, but it seems straitforward that all citizens should have the same responsibilities and rights. I don't get it, but what do I know I'm Canadian.

  • Is it only me?

[Read the article: Mel on the cross]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Anyone else see the striking resemblance between Mel and Saddam (post-Enduring freedom, but pre-trial)?

  • Futile security measures

[Read the article: Is airport security futile?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Maybe this time next year, we'll have to get on airplanes stark naked, with our naked, hungry babies and the airlines can charge for a set of clothes to wear on the planes!

  • Taking out Saddam

[Read the article: How bad is he?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The right justifies the mess in Iraq by stating that Saddam was a genocidal maniac and that the Iraqi people are now free from this madman. Yet they seem to have lost their long-term memory. The Reagan-Bush administration actively supported Saddam during the 1980s. So, the Repubs (presumably some of the same ones who wanted his head on a platter in 2002) were the ones who supported and strengthened his dictatorship 20 years earlier.

Below transcripts of an interview with Alan Friedman author of Spider's Web: The Secret History of How the White House Illegally Armed Iraq:

Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush, and James Baker who was Secretary of State, and Robert Gates, who was the C.I.A. Director in the 1980's, how they met what was called a tilt policy in favor of Iraq and against Iran in the 1980's ...

In the 1980's, the Reagan White House wasn't just busy defeating the so-called evil empire of the Soviet Union and out spending and bankrupting the Soviets, they were also engaged in a Middle East Policy in Iraq and Iran, that was aimed at obviously trying to defeat and neutralize the Islamic fundamentalists of Iran which were Americas perceived enemy at the time. To defeat Iran, we will fortify Saddam, he may be a killer. He may be a butcher, but he's our guy. We will keep him to keep a balance of power between Iran and Iraq.
