TV should focus on what TV can do best

Benny is right. Real sports fans want to see what happened, in meaningful context, without waiting through endless and meaningless blather to get to 5 second highlights. TV can do this. A particularly good example of this is GolTV's "Olé-La Liga", their Spanish soccer league wrap-up show (Mondays at 8PM ET; I point them out because I can't think of a comparable American stick-and-ball sports show). No schtik, no slick studio, you don't even see the talking head. Just one hour of meat. It's how it should be done.

Pat Roberts also uttered the Big Lie

In an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Senate intelligence committee chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kansas repeated the Saddam-refused-inspections lie:

"But, in regards to Saddam Hussein, if in fact he didn't have them, why on earth didn't he let the U.N. inspectors in and avoid the war? That is a real puzzlement to me."

This is the same senator who refuses to investigate the illegal warrantless spying on Americans by this president.

Blitzer, of course, let this slide by without challenge. (http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0401/25/le.00.html)

It should be noted that this press continues to carry water for this president even after the president attacks them for the bad news out of Iraq. Contemptible.

Republicans are really worried

If Republicans are so pleased about Feingold's censure motion, why are the so busy reminding the Democrat's base that they are walking off a cliff? If you really wanted someone to walk off a cliff, wouldn't you just stand by and let them do it, and not warn them away?

I think they protest too much. Republicans are worried.

Original article: McCain's Falwell flip-flop

Flip-flopped on the swift boat smear too

Remember, John McCain came out against the swift boat smear team during the 2004 campaign, and called upon George Bush to disavow them. Bush never did; this didn't stop McCain from cosying up to Bush and campaigning for him anyway. If you are going to claim to be principled, then you must show it. It's not easy, which is why someone with principles is appealing. I'll vote for Russ Feingold if I ever get a chance. Now there is a man with principles. Whatever you may think of his censure motion (and I think highly of it), it took courage to stand up only a few weeks after 9/11 and say No to the Patriot Act.

ABC and the WSJ know better

It is interesting that in both this story and the ABC gives lessons in lacrosstitution story, the work being critiqued was authored by a woman. In this case, Naomi Schaefer Riley; in the ABC story, Adrienne Mand Lewin. It is as if these organizations are quite conscious that if a man were to write such a story or commentary, they would be roundly condemned for it. And rightly so. So here is a clue for ABC and the WSJ: If it isn't right if a man writes it, then it probably isn't right if a woman writes it. You shouldn't be hiding behind female reporters and columnists in order to put out this trash, which you know to be wrong.

And furthermore...

Don't forget that we just signed up with India, who is not an NPT signatory, to help them do exactly what we claim Iran has no right to do under the NPT (never mind that the NPT allows for civil nuclear programs). This sort of double standard is not lost on the rest of the world.

Finally, isn't it quite ironic that we are considering using tactical nuclear weapons on Iran, because we allege they might be embarking on a nuclear weapons program? Who is violating the NPT here, I ask?

The insanity of this situation is beyond description.

Respect is earned

To what depths would would this president have to sink before the likes of Steny Hoyer finally realize that he does not deserve our respect? Colbert was brilliant. Bush and his enablers in the White House press corps had it coming. The only thing I regret is that Hoyer and his pusillanimous Democratic cohort didn't get their fair share from Colbert.

Cohen shows us the sorry state of our public discourse

"Cohen calls Colbert "rude" and "a bully," and says he took unfair advantage of the fact that the president of the United States knew that he couldn't rise up and punch him."

Wow. Have we sunk so low that it is now considered unfair that we can't beat up those we disagree with? Man are we ever lost...

Just how low can they go?

Wow. Just when you think they've really gone as low as they can, you learn that no, they can go lower. I knew we were in big trouble even as the 2000 election debacle unfolded, but time after time after time, when I thought I'd seen it all, they surprise and amaze me with their depravity. Brazenly stealing an election, with the Supreme Court's collusion. Passing the Patriot Act before anyone could read it. Cooking up a crisis with Iraq. Actually going to war with Iraq. Enriching their war profiteer buddies in Iraq. Spying on our overseas phone calls without a warrant. The Katrina incompetence. Signing statements. Generating a new crisis, this time in Iran; this time complete with the implied threat of nuclear weapons. And now this. Amazing. Simply amazing. What else are they up to? What will it take for us to pick up our pitchforks and torches?

What I like about Soccer (and Hockey)

The sudden, unexpected goal. It's what makes these sports so much fun. Recently during a Spanish Primera Liga soccer match Valencia's David Villa (the league's second leading scorer) received a quick pass at midfield after a steal. Glancing at the net, he saw that Deportivo's 'keeper was just a wee bit too far up and unleashed a blast from 55 yards out. A magnificent goal. The whole sequence took just under 4 seconds and covered some 65 yards. You can have NBA basketball, with it's 100 scores-per-game. This is what makes me come back for more. I scared every cat in the house celebrating Villa's goal!
