[Read the article: Google is watching you (but so is everyone else)]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Google doesn't seem to know or care that the images they are generating are captured forever in the capacious maw of internet archives. It should be abundantly clear to anyone who's ever Googled him/herself that every little detail that appears on the web is captured and stored permanently, usually in many different places. Such will be the case with street-level images.

We can preserve our internet anonymity with pen names and multiple e-mail accounts. Now, to preserve our physical privacy, we'll have to go outdoors incognito, as well as keeping our curtains permanently closed and getting California-style extra dark window tinting on our cars.

    Big Brother anyone?

  • Clues Free for the Asking

[Read the article: I hate my cat!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Although the OLW had good intentions, she created this situation by "rescuing" the kitten in the first place. She brought it up outside the company of its own kind, with no one to show it how to be a cat. What did she expect it to do? It's not all all nature, you know, nurture counts.

Now that she has ruined this cat by saving it, she's in anguish over how to minimize the effect on her own life. The only rational and humane solution is to put the poor thing down. It can never be a normal cat. It has been mentally damaged through improper upbringing and socialization into the ways of cats.

Next time, let nature takes its course.

  • Oh the Incivility!

[Read the article: Mind your manners online]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Gary, you ask too much. In order to show manners, people have to actually have them or at least know what they are. You claim that society is not less civil that before. Perhaps so, but the general preponderance of incivility in society today is made more visible via internet culture.

It's easy to lob rocks at invisible "others" from behind the protective scrim of the monitor. Where there is no social penalty for aggressive and obnoxious behavior, it will flourish.

I wish it could be different, but unlike you, Gary, I despair that it ever will be.

It would be interesting to follow this conversation if even ONE of the letter writers had a clue about the facts of VA disability evaluation or QTC or its management. But they don't, so I will offer a couple.

(1)Disability evaluation is just that--evaluation. It is NOT medical treatment. It is an examination of the veteran's current physical condition coupled with a review of all of the related medical history that contributes to the condition for which the veteran is claiming disability. Treatments that are reviewed may have been provided by VHA, DoD, or private healthcare. It doesn't matter to the evaluator's result. in fact, disability and healthcare are two completely separate divisions of the VA. Mr. Principi and Dr. Peake are perfectly accurate in their characterization of this process.

    (2) The purpose of using QTC Management is NOT to undertake some kind of total privatization of VA services. That's a ridiculous notion on its face. The VA's mission is to serve the vet, not pass the buck. QTC helps the VA to fulfill its mission to veterans by reducing the backlog of disability claims so that veterans are helped faster than they could be without dramatically expanding VA's internal staff with hard-to-find, expensive, trained medical professionals.

    (3) The LA Times investigation bore out the honorability of Secretary Principi. Even Rep. Waxman accepts that there was nothing underhanded involved. There is no reason to suspect otherwise with Dr. Peake. The fact is, QTC was founded by and continues to by managed by honorable people who truly care about our nation's veterans. Casting aspersions against these people based on unfounded suppositions is just scurillous.

    Signed,

and no, I don't work for QTC OR the VA

  • Must be the full moon

What a lot of bloviating BS!!! The LW needs to take a humility pill immediately and his main problem will be solved.

His daughter mostly needs to be protected from coming to believe that her father is the source of all knowledge. She should be helped to escape as soon as possible!

Carey needs to remember not to publish letters written during a full moon.
