We (the U.S.A.) have prosecuted, as War Crimes, many of the same actions that our government is now involved in. Waterboarding, for example.
Why was it wrong when it was done to our people, but now that we decide to do it, it's suddenly okay?
What about the Geneva Conventions? Wasn't that a mutual agreement that at least allowed us to have SOME comfort that our sons and daughters would be treated with some modicum of respect?
I served in the U.S. Navy in Sicily in the late 60s. I had many Italian gentlemen approach me and tell me how well they were treated as prisoners of war.
At one time, rightly or wrongly, we were respected for our humaneness. Is that the case today? At one time we genuinely cared about what the other people of the world thought of us. Is that the case today?
At one time we championed the cause of the downtrodden and hopeless. Is that the case today?
At one time we were truly a "christian" nation, in that we sought to uphold the virtues of fairness and justice. Is that the case today?
If so, how is it that people like John Yoo and Francis Fuckyomama are able to exist without heavy protection? What price, if any, should they pay for their construction of a philosophy that promotes and excuses actions that have always been considered reprehensible?
Can anyone tell me how our actions since 9/11 can be seen as anything other than a solid and concrete verification of ALL of the "evil" things that Osama Bin Laden alleged about us?
Can anyone imagine a more tragic or destructive response to the events of that terrible day? How much goodwill was there toward us on 9/12? Can anyone imagine that we could have done anything more destructive to that sentiment than the actions that have been "chosen" and "executed" in our name?
In my opinion, ANYONE who fails to condemn, in the strongest possible language, the atrocities and injustices that have been committed in the name of our nation, should justifiably face clear and strong condemnation and ETERNAL DAMNATION for their failure to speak out and demand justice for the criminal perpetrators of these horrible acts.
"Really, Glenn, either we have a President, whose judcial nominations require action, or else we don't"
And, for many of us we probably never did, except by ruling of Rehnquist, et al, circa 2000.
We don't really have any use for the sort of psychopaths and social engineers that have been floated to the top. Borkian is too gentle a term in this case, especially when one considers the seismic demographic shift of the electorate. How can we, in all fairness, burden them with this detritus of judicial bottom-feeders?
Not only is it time to "take out" the trash, it's time to make sure that we don't allow anymore to enter the system.
Hell yeah! Go get him.
You say "one of the most unpopular wars...."
Which war would you say was MORE unpopular than this one?
What "measurement" of popularity (or unpopularity) would you cite?
I'm not disagreeing, just interested in how you're thinking on this......
"The fact that someone holds fringe, widely discredited views -- with a history of supporting a now-collapsed political party -- doesn't prove that they are wrong."
OF COURSE IT DOES!
The results of their patent stupidity speak for themselves.
Good to see this "Pathetic Loser" is calling the shots.
The report on NPR this morning was that he is "Pro death penalty".....
Also that Specter was upset about the Rich pardon.....
This will be a good opportunity to see just how much of a roadblock the republicans will be.
I'm an old-fashioned KOOK.
Nutcase, whacko, pinko, liberal, tree-hugging. KOOK........
Old Hippie, radical.
You rule. In my opinion you are the number one thinker going today.
Great stuff.
Obama may not be everything that many "dreamed" of, but man I am very excited. Pragmatic works for me.
And as you said, if nothing else but the Supreme Court appointments, that's a HUGE victory for EVERY AMERICAN (who ain't a freakin' KOOK!)!!!
Pray that Obama has enough wisdom to see through this bullshit. Every twist and turn of this tragedy has been marked by a mendaciousness that surpasses all belief. I personally warn those who haven't spoken up in opposition: This stain is on your soul. Speak up or your karma is doomed.
They been watching that "24" garbage. Maybe that's the problem.
What happened to RUIN them? I will never support them again. They are polluted. Infested. Infected.
Well, there's no question that they DO matter. I am really disturbed by Gates, for example. On the CIA and NSA, I have no clue what he should do.
I can only hope that Obama is true to himself and to his past statements. Having said that, I will always give any man the benefit of doubt should he change his mind.
I don't think that Obama lied to us to get where he is, but I wouldn't presume to think that he doesn't know what he's doing, and I wouldn't think that everything that I thought about him was a lie.
I have no idea what his thinking is. I have no idea what his strategy is, or if he has some "greater plan" that is unknown to us, because he hasn't revealed it yet.
I am CERTAIN of one thing: He is a better choice than John McCain and he will do a better job. He may not be as liberal as I would like, but for now I can settle for whatever HE decides to do, whether I agree or not. I'm not going to get crazy about anything. The past eight years have pretty much worn me out!
