Shooter242, ever hear of Pancho Villa? The Army under General John J. Pershing chased him through Northern Mexico in 1916.

Quentin Roosevelt

All the tough talking arm chair rambos keeping asking about FDR's military service. Not only did his sons serve but so did Theodore Roosevelt's sons who were FDR's nephews. TR's son and FDR's nephew Quentin was shot down and killed in action in France in 1918.

Corection

TR's sons were not FDR's nephews because TR and FDR were cousins not brothers but it does not change the fact that the Roosevelt family lost a family member due to hostile action in France in 1918.

Can Bush, Chaney, Romney, etc. say that?

Real Americans

So it has come to this. A Know Nothing claims the right to decide who is a real American.

Would she consider the following three war heroes to be real Americans? Coporal Ira Hayes (USMC),Pima native American who helped raise the American flag at Iwo Jima, February 25, 1945; LCDR Ernest E. Evans (USN), three quarter Cherokee native American, who as captain of the USS Johnston (DD-557) received a posthumous Medal of Honor for heroism against Japanese forces at Leyte Gulf, October 25, 1944; RADM Joseph J. Clark (USN), also a Chekoree Native American, who during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 21, 1944, ordered his task group to turn their lights on after sundown so returning planes could land on their carriers.

I doubt it but this sorry excuse for a human being isn't fit to brush their boots.

Judge Lefkow

It doesn't matter that Judge Lefkow is not Jewish. In Hale's eyes, a non Jewish woman married to a Jew is a race traitor who deserves nothing but death. Read "The Turner Diaries" sometime.

Can Muslims be Good Americans?

Change one word: Can Jews be Good American? Henry Ford and a lot of people didn't so and still don't.

As for the charges of zenophobia and misogeny laid against Islam. Those are the same charges against Judaism. Google Talmud Exposed and see what you get.

Nothing changes except the names. Once it was the Jews and now it's the Muslims. Who's next?

Serbia and the Austria-Hungary 1914

No one has mentioned the stituation between Serbia and Austria-Hungary after Sarajevo. After the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists supported by elements of the Serbian government, Austria-Hungary handed Serbia an ultimatum they were convinced that Serbia would reject.

But the Serbians accepted almost the entire ultimatum except for a few points that they wanted adjudicated at the Hague. It didn't matter, the Austro-Hungarians atacked Serbia anyway. Why? Because the Austro-Hungarians saw Sarajevo as the golden opportunity to crush Serbian nationalism once and for all and keep their empire from total disintegration.

Conclusion: It would never have mattered what Tabliban did or didn't. Even if they had delivered bin Laben's head to the United States on a platter, the United States would have seen 9/11 as a golden opportunity to get rid of the Tabliban and establish a major presence in Afghanistan.

Someone mentioned that the Tabliban had not accepted the United States's ultimatum after a month had passed. Date of assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand: June 28, 1914. Date of Austro-Hungarian declaration against Serbia: July 28, 1914. One month. As they say, there's nothing new under the sun.

Involvement in Afghanistan is called "The Great Game." Britain invaded Afghanistan three times in the 19th century to block Czarist Russia's expansion into India. They also got their heads handed back to them each time.

The US lured the Soviet Union into Afghanistan in order to bleed it white. The Soviets were trying to prop up its puppet government in Kabul to give it the same buffer in Central Asia that it had in Eastern Europe.

Someone mentioned oil and opium as the reason for the United States's involvement in The Great Game. Good reasons but there might have been another reason.

Go back to the Project For The New American Century. That's The Great Game of the Middle East. It called for defeating any and all opponents of US-Israeli hegemony there. Iran is any very formidable opponent: 70 million people, control of a large share of the world's oil supply and a still powerful military.

You mentioned early 20th century history. let's go back to 1871. Germany wrested Alsace-Lorraine from France. France was planning to retake its "lost provinces" but it needed an ally to do it. Russia was the obvious choice. Bismarck's policy from 1871 to 1890 was to foil such an alliance and prevent encirclement. After 1890, Kaiser Bill and his chancellors bungled it and France and Russia formed an alliance against Germany.

Germany now faced a two front war.

Now, if the US were to attack Iran, would it be better to attack on one front or two fronts? US control of Iraq and Afghanistan means that it has been encircled and would have to fight a two front war with the United States.

It's in the same position as Imperial Germany and it mayneed an alliance with Russia or China or both to avoid attack.

Gaza

If Marty Peretz wants to saw Hamas not to "fuck with the Jews," why not demand that "low yield" nuclear weapons be used in Gaza. That'll show them who's boss. And since Israel would be the one doing it, it's 100% correct. (sarcasm)
