  • $$$ to local economy

    [Read the article: McCain's offshore oil-drilling flip-flop]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Florida makes a boatload of money from tourism and many fear that oil wells at the beach will not help that industry, let alone if there is ever an accident.

This is the real reason that many state Republicans were against drilling, just like the Dems. Governor Crist had to change his view last week.

A few jobs (and that's all there is for locals) for the oil rigs would not make up for a hit to the tourism industry.

  • Michelle's image

[Read the article: Who's afraid of Michelle Obama?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I for one love her. She impresses the hell out of me, but to be fair, I like straight talking people, opinionated people.

There is a meme being put out to define Michelle Obama, and it is a combination of sexism and racism.

From a coworker who listens to way too much RW radio..."Michelle's so angry, why is she so mad? Look at her, she went to Princeton because she's black, she's luckier than any of his family...blah, blah, blah" "What's her grudge?" I hear the conservatives talk about Obama'a and Michelle's claims of racism hurting them, trying to make it seem like the Obama's only strength is to cry victim...and yet everyone I know that likes them is because of their strength, not because of "guilt" or pity. Where is the speech that Michelle or Obama played victim that the right is decrying? Hmm? She and he are both tough and the RW are trying to find a successful, divisive tack to attack...without turning off too many people.

A Hillary supporter I know that will happily vote for Obama was explaining to me that she likes Obama well enough, but his "radical" wife does concern her... That's means the meme is beginning to stick, because what's so radical about Michelle to a liberal?

It sucks that they feel the need to soften her image, but it means that the campaign is aware that the attacks are beginning to be felt. I heard one commentator say that they are trying to change her image from Angela Davis to Claire Huxtable. Damn...but at least Claire was supposed to be a successful lawyer.

  • Trouble loading

Off topic, but I'm having the same problem with Salon, it's taking forever to load and getting the letters is almost not worth it. It hangs up between every page and after I posted my letter it locked up so bad I rebooted.

I'm not having problems with other sites.

  • Fear

[Read the article: Keith Olbermann: Then and now]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Now I'm beginning to see what the R's were doing with their support of all things Bush, no matter how bad some of the ideas were. They were afraid it would hurt their "team".

It looks like we are beginning to see the same thing with many Dems.

I don't want Keith to become Rush. Damn.

  • A few points and an aside

[Read the article: Jindal approves castration for sex offenders]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

First, Susan Woods is spot on. If the penalty for rape is the same is rape/murder, a criminal is better off (and less likely to be caught) by killing the victim. The murderer does not leave behind a witness who can testify, they are "safer" with them dead. Oh joy.

Second, there are convicted rapists and murderers still being released today that DNA is proving were innocent of the crimes they were convicted for. You can not bring back the dead or testicles if that had been the punishment.

Third, for people that think this would only be for the heinous, for "sure" crimes, remember the McMartin (sp?) case in CA awhile back? Everyone knew they were child molestors, satan worshippers, torturers, etc. They had a bunch of kids and parents testify to the fact. Well, turned out, nothing of the sort happened and the whole thing got ginned up by an insane woman who created mass hysteria among parents and kids that were led into creating weird stories.

Lastly, rape and molestation are not all created equal. The definitions shift. An 18 year old high school senior and his one day short of 16 year girlfriend having sex is considered rape. Is that really the same as a 35 year old man/woman with a 3 year old? They really did convict the young black high school guy for getting a blow job from a fellow student, white. He was sentenced to 10 years, should he have been castrated? Good grief.

p.s. Elephantman, what's your take on this? I disagree with Obama's, and Jindall's. Just because someone has a D or R after there name does not mean we have to agree with them, something lost on all those people that have defended every damn thing Bush has done who now try to claim Bush wasn't really conservative.

  • Missing my point

[Read the article: Jindal approves castration for sex offenders]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Except that by killing the victim, what was once a non-capital crime becomes one

I was talking about the issue of rape being made a capital crime. That's what the SCOTUS decision was about.

  • Hmm

My last post looks kind of funny without the post I was replying to.

Though the part I ignored was no doubt the reason it was removed...

  • Being vague

My guess is because of your phrasing of what happened during the case in question.

I didn't know the child rapist's name in the SCOTUS case and had no idea that you weren't making some weird reference to a rumor about a prominent liberal political family...especially since you called them our hero.

Maybe the editor didn't know, you weren't clear and could have been seen as accusing a well known Senator (or a relative of his) of a really heinous crime.
