Mark to market

What it means simply put, is the value of a security if it were put on the market today, not some value that is determined from a mathematical formula about what it "should" be valued at if it were sold.

If nobody wants to buy your security, than essentially the mark to market value is $0.

RE: Penn

Finally, finally.

Now if Hillary would just say that her economic expert team that needs to come up with ideas to fix the mess we're in would NOT include Greenspan (who just endorsed McCain, no shock there) she'd be batting even better.

Regarding the healthcare story, we don't know if it was a lie told to Clinton or not, we only know that a hospital says they never denied care that resulted in death...I would expect them to say nothing else. The story needs to be investigated, and no doubt will be.

Who knows?

I was addressing ttb's contention that John King is simply an agnostic reporter, where as I see it more likely, based on his "interview" of McCain and his subsequent email to Glenn Greenwald, - among many other examples of King's 'work', that King is an in the tank right wing reporter.

It could be either.

I do think there is a strong element of the "cool kids" at play. Right now, even with the Dems having a small majority in Congress, they don't have the power yet...and if they do, they've been piss poor at showing it. The R's seem to run the show and the debate, with the press following.

If there is a massive shift this fall, we may well see different...though there will always be media favorites. The press also likes Biden (it didn't help in his Pres. bid, though, and for a long while McCain was doing pretty poorly, too, just had weaker primary opponents on so many levels than Biden did and was able to last out their implosions) because these guys talk all the damn time.

Biden and McCain love to talk, which makes the press's job easy and makes them feel part of the club, important.

I hope not...

If Mukasey's at Burning Man this year it will ruin it for me...

Marriage

An unmarried woman of her age will not be trusted by many in the Republican base, and they already are iffy enough on McCain because of his so-called moderate stances.

My guess is he's going to pick either a hard core business type (Romney) or the other side, someone the evangelicals can get behind...though not Huckabee, the business community would freak if he were next in line to be President.

They're suceeding

I've had four intellegent people tell me recently that at least the Republican's have chosen a moderate, so at least we don't have have to worry about any possibility of war with Iran and that choice is still an option. Woo, what a relief!

These are Democrats or Independents that lean Democratic and are all solidly anti-Bush.

Let the MSM keep repeating the gossip about the Dem's and make it all about personalities so that none of us ever have to worry ourselves with petty things like issues and the direction our country is headed.

That anyone would actually defend this type of reporting is mind boggling...let alone a political reporter and a professor. At this point, I'd feel better if they said there stories were edited and/or nixed by their bosses.

@Electro Robot

Cover Obama as if he is the Messiah.

I don't know if you're a long time reader of Glenn, but if you are you should remember that he's been accused of being a supporter of Ron Paul, Edwards, Dodd and Huckabee. They can't all be true...

Actually, GG's pretty consistent. He hates bogus journalism, so hit pieces that are petty and personality driven he'll call out, just like he'll call out a candidate's view being purposely ignored or distorted.

That he is saying the Obama coverage has now crossed into silly and petty is consistent.

It's not getting better

In CA, the phones in my neighborhood all went down, thieves had managed to steal about 1/2 mile of underground phone lines for the copper.

When I went to recycle cans a few years back, the truck in front of me had a truckbed full of new copper pipe.

It's amazing to see it shift to lead now, too.

Enhanced Interrogations

ABC says that Condi, Ashcroft, Powell, Tenet, etc. all had detailed talks about what kind of treatment Al Queda suspects should get, down to the details of how many slaps, when to waterboard, etc.

Charming.

I'm wondering who gave this info

BTW, I have to wonder who turned and gave all the info on the "Principal's Committee".

While Yoo is still no prize, this kind of takes the heat of of him for a bit, doesn't it?

Yoo

I agree that Yoo is despicable.

Personally, I think it's more of a bombshell that Rice, Powell, Rumsfeld, Tenet & Ashcroft were personally involved in the details of the interogations. And that Rice seems to be the reason that they continued after others got a little squeemish.

Yoo just got knocked off the pages that are actually covering the issue.

As Ashcroft wondered out loud...

"ABC cited a top official as saying that Ashcroft asked aloud after one meeting: "Why are we talking about this in the White House? History will not judge this kindly."
