While I agree that there is some water that is unsafe to drink, many do not trust water that has been tested.
I live on a boat much of the year and I have a reverse osmosis watermaker. I always test the water and it tests better than San Diego city water. I also can fill up at a marina that has filtered water and that tests very well also. I've done this test on water that leaves my faucet, after being in our tanks and that has gone through my boat's piping.
I still provide bottled water for most of my friends and family because they do not trust either source of my water. I can drink gallons of it, and yet some of my friends will still use the bottled water to even brush their teeth...so it's not a matter of "taste" that so many claim.
For people that truly do fear their drinking water, what's wrong with the large reusable plastic jugs? Besides being more environmentally sound, it's tons cheaper. If someone isn't able to lug the bottle around to the store, even delivered water would seem to work out better and be cheaper.
I recognize that taste is an issue for many. But why can't people buy a cheap Pur or Brita filter? They are less than $50 bucks and that's a hell of a lot cheaper than $1 per 12 oz. of water.
Or as pointed out by others, why not use refillable plastic jugs? If having water delivered is too expensive, take your jug to the dispenser in front of every grocery store I've ever been to and refill it. Many (if not most) bottled waters are just filtered tap anyway.
There was a big scandal in Sacramento (many, many years ago)about a fairly high end brand of water that turned out to be unfiltered Sacramento tap.
On a side note, my husband's oncologist strongly recommended that he only drink tap water, not well or spring water (yep, that included the bottled varieties of spring water) because his treatment left him immuno-suppressed. City of Hope's transplant center reaffirmed this.
Water in bottles is simply another style of prebottled beverage and does not compete with tap water. It competes with other prebottled beverages.
At my office in Southern California, one of my coworkers will not drink coffee that's brewed from tap water. He always asks me how I made it, because he knows that I think it's dumb when we have perfectly good water right next to the coffee pot...and that the friggin' water gets boiled.
I know numerous people that will not drink anything but bottled water, they wouldn't dare use a public drinking fountain if they were paid to do so, nor would they let their children.
I'm not a purist, if I'm at a gas station (or a theater) and I'm thirsty, I'll buy a bottled water. But I think that's just a fraction of the useage. When I was in high school a gazillion years ago, I worked at a theater. We gave out plastic cups for the water fountain if someone wanted water...now that the theater can charge theater prices for overpriced bottles to begin with, I bet that practice has changed.
I do think we've been sold a "need" that's not necessarily there.
As for "boil orders" from a different poster, you'll never know if that was necessary for your bottled water, since it's not regulated. There might be a recall if it's serious and they can track it down, otherwise, you are going on faith.
I think he has, to be honest. Because this would, in essence, strip the states of any police power whatsoever over corporations. It's breathtaking to see how quickly these people abandon their commitment to state's rights, when they feel that they have control over Congress.
This would assume that it was thought out all the way to it's conclusion.
From the level of thought put into the rest of the rant (that this should be a federal tort case, judicial activism, etc.) I'd say there is more emotion than logic to the piece.
Remember, this is coming from the "money IS free speech" crowd.
Am I the only one reading the review who thinks that the cut penis comment was sarcasm? Stephanie is letting you know the movie is NOT funny...even when it tries to be.
As to SZ not liking any of the film's she reviewed today, maybe they weren't that good. I don't see many defenders of the actual movies in any of comments to these reviews.
Last point on sarcasm and double entendres....
Do you remember the movie "Scream"? It made a joke about the beautiful woman who while running (with the obligatory trip) who slowly loses most of her clothes, gets wet, and then gets the knife in her silicone breast. It's pretty funny because it' a decent parody of a ton of slasher flicks I saw growing up. BTW, those cheesy movies and the movie "Scream" were never critic's favorites either.
As for penis jokes, well, I doubt that all the producers or viewers of America's Favorite Home Video's were women. I wasn't a fan because I could only stand so many "hit in the crotch" scenes.
When you have Rudy as still being the favorite of the pundit class. Fred Thompson's background might be interesting, too. Interesting being a subjective thing, personally, I want NO details. Really, no details...
Sex will be an issue only if it's Hillary vs. Mike or Mitt. If that happens, then all of Bill's failings have to be brought back up with hints to the reasons for them being Hillary's fault. She's weak, she's cold, she's gay, she's so calculating she doesn't give a damn, etc.
Thanks for calling Klein out again and trying to keep these guys honest.
