When waste is warmth...
[Read the article: Put a stake in it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bear in mind that all the electricity these appliances waste becomes heat.
When the weather is cold, eliminating this waste will increase the amount of money directly spent on heating. At the extreme, if your home is electrically heated, the extra heating cost may cancel out the predicted 'savings'.
But in hot weather, when you are paying for air conditioning rather than for heating, you pay twice for that wasted electricity, first for consuming it (turning it into heat), and then again for the extra electricity your air conditioner uses to get rid of it.

When waste heat isn't wasted...
[Read the article: The light-bulb wars switch on again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If you're stuck with electric heating (living for example in a Vancouver condo), then the 'waste' heat from light bulbs or any other household electricity consumption is just less heat you'll need to produce with your electric heating system. I've done a blog post on this; you can read it by clicking on my signature below.
Of course the shoe is on the other foot in summer, if you need to use electricity for air conditioning.

Science is only defending itself.
[Read the article: What's wrong with science as religion]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If religions would stop publicly attacking our science, we evolutionary biologists would have no interest in their beliefs. I think the onus should be on the more-sensible of the religious people to get their fundamentalist brethren under control.
