Again and again we see ideas coming from Edwards -- and just vague hype coming out of Hillary.
Edwards has a specific vision of where he wants to take the country.
Hillary vision seems to begin and end with procaliming how she "Loves apple pie and baseball! Go America!"
I have to really applaud the Salon editors for giving attention to other candidates and not just (once again) spending those pages gushing about Hillary -- gushing not for any of her political accomplishments, mind you (their really aren't any) -- but just because she is married to Bill Clinton. Yup. She is definitely married to an actual former president who himself has actual accomplishments. Hillary, despite the hype, has done next to nothing noteworthy except attempt to pass universal healthcare as First Lady. Her one actual feat of noteworthiness is also the same thing she is running away from at top speed as she proposes, vague healthcare "reform" and takes bribes, er, I mean contribution from insurance companies.
If Salon keeps this up the Hillary Machine (running now on nothing more than name recongition and bumper sticker feel good slogans) will finally run out of steam -- and real candidates with actual ideas, vision and experience will get the nomination.
John Edwards is an actual Democrat. Hillary is more of a Lieberman Democrat. Her policies are just Bush-lite.
Go Edwards!
This sounds a lot like what the Conservatives believed about the Communists in Asia.
“We have to stop them in Vietnam or else…or else they will take over the entire world and…and…and our country will be utterly destroyed!”
This kind of hysteria was common thinking during the build-up to Vietnam and people were still saying it even as we were leaving Saigon! They were convinced beyond any doubt that within six months of our leaving Vietnam the commies would be launching nukes at us or invading our shores. (Does any of that fear of withdrawal sound familiar?)
The only mystery is why we listen to these hysterics anymore and treat them as serious scholars?
These people are uniquely obsessed with the foreign “other” that is going to jump out from under the bed and kill them.
This kind of phobia needs to be (and I say this seriously) treated as a neurosis and mental disorder rather than a nuanced, pragmatic political viewpoint.
People could have been forgiven Vietnam as nothing like it had really happened before – but to literally repeat point-for-point every single mistake in thinking, planning and execution that occurred during our disastrous military campaign in Vietnam in Iraq bespeaks more of mental disorder then “honest” mistakes.
Whenever Bush shrugs his shoulders and excuses the disaster in Iraq by saying, “Mistakes were made!” I can’t help but think of a gambling addict or a junkie in prison for a B and E excusing his behavior by shrugging his shoulders and saying, “Mistakes were made, dude! Stop getting on my case and telling me what to do! You’re not perfect!”
Sigh.
Just curious.
From a practical, logistical point of view the whole idea that poor, unemployed independent guerilla cells living in Iraq and/or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia could some how “take over” America is just patently absurd.
Was it at least theoretically possible that the Soviet army could invade the US?
Yes. It was at least theoretically possible.
Is there any scenario wherein an American administration could guarantee that an Islamic man won’t set off a car bomb in the United States?
No.
Is there any scenario wherein an America administration could guarantee that by simply maintaining a military presence in Iraq that we will never have an Islamic car bomb explode in the United States?
No.
Is there any ANY conceivable scenario wherein Osama bin Laden could gather an army of 500,000 plus soldiers with tanks, fighter jets and a navy with battleships to invade the United States?
No.
So what we have is hysterical (mentally unbalanced? Phobic?) Republicans terrified of scenarios that could NEVER occur even in a theoretical sense.
Not only should these people be barred from holding sensitive government positions – they should be physically removed and held in a psychiatric treatment facility for their own safety!
The hysteria is itself irrational – but more disturbing is that the “plan” to defeat these fictional/non-existent Islamic super soldiers is so disengaged from reality! Even when its patently obvious to everyone on earth that using our regular army infantry to mediate local neighborhood gang wars between Sunni and Shite in Iraq (and totally ignoring actual Al-Qaeda members in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan) isn’t working – their “solution” is just to keep doing it!
I truly believe what we’re seeing is some kind of mass hysteria or mass psychosis among Republicans.
All her "ideas" and "bold" visions are just watered down versions of same old corporate-republicanism.
Hillary cannot win an election!
Everyone including Dems hate her!
Plus, even if she did win we'd just end up with another Repubican-lite in the White House.
Hillary is about as Progressive as freaking Lieberman!
Compare Edwards to Hillary and you're comparing a Democrat to a moderate Republican.
For the love of God DNC -- do not make Hillary a nominee!
If Hillary gets the nomination we can either vote for another corporate welfare "global warming is a hoax/tax breaks for Bill Gates solves everything!" Republican -- or we can vote for whoever the RNC puts up as a candidate.
