Honesty.

Honesty is the best policy.

When to tell? Like Cary said, when it becomes obvious that sex could eventually follow. That does not mean when you are in bed naked. Maybe it is after along make out session. You won't be sleeping together that night, but know you will eventually. You tell the truth.

I was involved with a girl for months. We always had safe sex. She pushed for us both to be tested. We were having safe sex at the time, the exception being me going down on her without protection. She wanted to go down on me, but would not until after we were tested. I was fine with all that. We got tested. I was negative on everything. Then she says, "I kind of forgot to tell you something." She forgot to tell me something? She was letting me perform oral sex on her, knowing she had herpes, yet she did not want to on me until I was tested?

The relationship may or may not have survived herpes. It was not going to survive dishonesty by omission. It was not going to survive the double standard she imposed on it. It ended shortly after that.

Luckily I still test negative to this day.

BTW, every girl knows I am a recovering alcoholic before we sleep together or before we become very emotionally involved. If they have an issue with it, and few do, I want them to have the option to opt out while there can still be relatively little hurt for either of us.

Do Your Best

What a sad but common story. The grandmother can do things to help her grandchildren. As previously suggested, she can buy them books and read to them. She can help make sure they know how to read and help them to enjoy it. Should they need shoes or coats, she can provide them. She can cook them nutritious meals when they visit, and maybe have them help as much as they can. She can offer to babysit, using that time to expose the grandchildren to new things. She can teach them life skills their parents are lacking. SHe can love those grandchildren.

I think providing for the grandchildren while making the parents responsible for their actions is a balancing act. However, both need to be done.

Buying them a van was a smart thing. Putting it in their name where they could sell it was not.

If you don't meet simple educational, financial, and medical standards, and you have children, the state should be allowed to take them away and place them in suitable adoptive homes.

The problem with this statement is that there are not suitable homes for them. Many of the homes that are available are worse than leaving them with neglected parents. Monsters tend to create monsters. I suggest everybody read the book "Jesusland" by Julia Scheeres. Take a peek inside some adopted families. (That is not to suggest the writer of this article was in any way lacking as a parent. She seems to be loving and caring. Since she adopted late, her son had started down his path and seemed to be unwilling to change much.)

Bravo!

Let me give a big thanks to these guys. They are making change, good change.

The same corruption I dislike in Republicans is certainly present here -- these gentlement have an outsized voice in our collective future because they have more money.

This is not corruption. These are people who are fighting the influx of money from religious groups and corporations with money of their own. How is this corrupt? They are giving voice to what many Americans feel. They are countering the over amplified voice of greedy corporate America and the religious fruitcakes.

How's your boy?

"Since he has a job and hasn't been asked to leave any country he was visiting, he is doing much better than your daughters."

Or

"Fine, how is your drinking problem?"

Circulate the List

I think our soldiers who are risking their lives should see that list. They need to see how the president and the wealthy are suffering while our soldiers are underpaid, soldiers are sent overseas without proper body armor, benefits for veterans are cut, families of military serving are standing in line for handouts in North Carolina, many reservists are working on their third tours, and thousands of soldiers are coming home every year missing body parts.

I am sure many of the Halliburton officers will be eating similar spreads at their Christmas get togethers.

In this time of war, shouldn't the Bush's tone down their celebrations? They won't but maybe they really should.

If they wanted....

The voting machine companies could make a secure voting machine with a voter verified paper trail if they want. My ATM machine, made by Diebold, not only gives me a paper receipt, it gives me one with scanned images of any checks I may have just deposited. My money is counted and calculated perfectly. I know it is correct.

The problem is that the companies do not want to make secure machines. Stealing from wingnut Peggy Noonan, I think it would be irresponsible for us to not speculate why.

More Successful?

Yeah, and I need find a way that is more successful in my attempt to sleep with Selma Hayek. I think I will be sleeping with Selma way before Bush figures out a winning strategy for Iraq.
