Versus

- Cycling. The Giro d’Italia’s in full swing. The Tour de France is about a month away.

And

The other sport I follow is cycling. Strangely, both of these sports have found a home on Versus.

Yeah, but Versus sucks on cycling coverage. The Giro d'Italia is going on, which is way more exciting than the boring Tour de France and has much more beautiful scenery, and yet Versus can only be bothered to show it on Sundays. Even if they would show a one hour, or a half hour, show a night so we could see the highlights, they might be able to build up an audience.

Versus also does stupid stuff during the Sunday shows like having a 5 minute wrap up of all the previous exciting stages, and then spend 1 hour and 55 minutes on a time trial. Boring for even most cyclists! At least Versus is showing the Sping Classics regularly now.

An old hockey fan friend was watching the Ottawa Senators-Buffalo Sabres game when they cut away. He has not watched much hockey in a few years, but was enjoying the game. He could not find another station showing the overtime after they switched. He is not to interested in investing much time to watch a game again anytime soon. Yes NBC is in commerce, but they show more hockey than horse races and getting a few more percentage points for hockey games might be more profitable for them than getting a few more for a one-time-a-year race. Perhaps they should think about that.

Baseball may have odd things going on....

But it ain't nothing like what is going on in pro cycling right now. I was so looking forward to King writing about the Lemond/Landis situation. We are talking about drugs, child sexual abuse, blackmail, caller-ID, yellow and black ties and all kinds of weird stuff. C'mon King!

Fixed it for you!

What a crass solipsist, clod and yahoo Paglia is -- and what a bad advertisement for both liberalism and lesbianism.

Standard Fox News tactic!

Except they always frame it as "Some people say...." Then you add whatever BS piece of inflammatory garbage you want to slander or libel somebody with. Thorne just messed up by using a name instead of of the old "some people."

Truth

Will you...

be thinking about the soldiers when you tell their families that their effort was always a waste and they were just stupid pawns in an unjust war?

Well, if the truth will help prevent this crap from happening again.... the the truth should be told no matter how painful.

Do you think the Tillman family thinks their son died for some noble cause? Do you think the others all think that? The people I work with who have lost family members in Iraq think the deaths were a waste. The people I know who have been stop-lossed and are returning to Iraq think it is a waste. Many soldiers believe they are being used. They certainly are not the ones getting rich off this war.

tiberius, if you think the war is just, why aren't you over there fighting? Why aren't you risking your life for a war you seem to strongly support, at least while behind a keyboard. Is being one of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders as close as you will allow yourself to get?

Patti Smith

I have to agree with pbrown. Patti Smith has got to be on the list. otherwise it is crap. You can argue lots of other artists, but she had the most influential debut album of all time.

I hate to say it, but there is a BeeGees song that should probably be on the list. It may not have been a good influence, but it left a huge footprint.

There should be a few Vietnam era protest songs. Music made a difference back then.

Spears? Please!

I Love Patti Smith

I got into her music late, but was thrilled to see her get into the Hall of Fame. I like her politics. However, her association with Nader just bugs the crap out of me.

I am looking forward to her new CD.

Pure Genius

The idea to do this was genius and the execution is incredible. I think if Seuss was alive, he would be delighted with these. They need to be released.

Please....

I am not even going to comment on the appropriateness of rap lyrics. However, to use rap as an excuse for an old cowboy-hat-wearing white male to insult Rutgers basketball team is ludicrous. He insulted them because he is a racist. It does not matter if other people are, or what words other people use. He insulted some accomplished young women he does not know. He should be fired, period.

I was cycling the other night and ran into a Bill O'Reilly loving wingnut I know. I asked him about the O'Reilly and Geraldo blow hard fest from a few nights before. He immediately starts up with Imus, defending him by saying Jesse Jackson is the biggest racist of all. He would not even talk about O'Reilly, he wanted to get all worked up about Jesse Jackson. I finally told him that I did not care if Tinker Bell was a racist, it was no excuse for Imus to be one and to express it over the radio with slurs. I thought the guys head was going to explode.

Wingnut logic always seems to be that if they can paint one Democrat or African American with a fault, incorrectly or not, it absolves any and all Republicans who may have that fault. This is what they are doing now. If they can say that rappers use bad words and phrases, it is OK for anybody else. They are absolved.

I am going to say it again. It does not matter who else may say anything else, it was wrong for Imus to say what he did, and he should be fired.

Underpaid.

Seriously, she had to sleep with Paul Wolfowitz. Many would require a much higher salary to do that job!
