I don't know about anyone else, but my cable box allows me to block any channels I like (and since my TV is only a few months old I assume it came with a v-chip as well). And my TiVo ALSO offers me the option of blocking channels or even specific shows that I don't want to watch. I don't have kids but if I did, I would probably take advantage of my cable box and TiVo's boxes ability to block certain channels and/or shows, especially if I didn't want my five-year-old kid watching MTV, for example.
I am 25, and grew up in the era before v-chips and whatnot. If my parents didn't like what I was watching, they came in and made me change the channel or turned the TV off. Why is this so hard for some people?
I respect people who want to make sure their kids aren't watching inappropriate stuff. But this is just getting silly. Accept that other people like to watch raunchy stuff like South Park, block it from your TV so your kids don't see it, and move on!
And I totally, totally agree with the other letter-writers who are calling for a la carte cable programming.
"While he screamed at me, I wanted to ask, "Who are you, and what have you done with the man who raised me to be tolerant, patient, peaceful and charitable?" "
I think the same thing sometimes when I'm arguing with my parents over the latest news item, like the so-called "War on Christmas." My parents always raised me to be kind to other people, to help those less fortunate, that kind of thing... and then my mother says something like (and this is majorly simplified), "Poor people are lazy." Of course, she listens to Bill O'Reilly when she's driving around (and living in the suburbs, she does a lot of driving) and parrots his talking points back to me.
And my mom is defintitely NOT dumb - she's a very skilled RN, and she's extremely kind and compassionate to her fellow woman. But sometimes the stuff that comes out of her mouth, that is exactly whatever the Republican party line is, makes me want to shake her and yell, "Who are you, and what have you done with my mother?!"
I like to listen to Howard Stern (or at least I did; I don't have Sirius) but his fans are some of the weirdest, sickest and craziest people I have ever heard. Some of his fans are obsessed with him (and if you've ever heard the voicemail messages they get, you know what I mean). I don't doubt that they would torment his daughter if she appeared nude on stage - not only by posting pictures of her everywhere on the Internet, but I am sure they would show up and heckle her onstage, at the very least. If Howard Stern were a nobody I bet this would only be a minor issue about a dad being uncomfortable with strangers seeing his daughter naked.
I was a vegetarian for three years and yeah, it annoyed the piss out of me when meat eaters tried to sneak meat into my food without telling me. It was so offensive, and I was never one of those humorless veggies who would tell people that they were terrible for eating meat. People can eat whatever the hell they want; I just didn't want to eat meat for my own personal reasons.
But you know what made me start eating meat again? Bacon. My boyfriend has bacon every Saturday morning and one morning the smell was too much to resist. After that, it was a hot dog, and then some steak, and two years later I'm sitting here eating a salami sandwich.
Thanks for the laugh, Keith! I thought this was a hilarious comic.
