  • what exactly is admirable?

For the record, I have not seen the movie or the TV show, and I don't think I could identify Heigl if asked. But it seems that she is demonstrating that she will compromise her dignity for money. What would have been ballsy/ovaries-y would have been to turn down the seven figure payday on principle, not qualifying it after the fact.

Furthermore, does it really need to be pointed out that someone wrote the line, "Oh my God, breasts," for Heigl's character. This really sells it for you? She's still appearing in her underware to drive up the show ratings. When the NYT includes a photo gallery of "sexy costumes" in addition to an article about the nature of women's halloween costume choices, you rightfully call them out. Why do you applaud it here just because of a fake line?

  • missing the larger point

The calendar broke Spanish law by encouraging "macho behavior?" Really? I'd love to see what the actual language says. But, what really surprises me is that there is no comment that the Women's Institute's argument was that the calendar would incite violence against women. It seems extremely troubling that this government group, which I would presume is there to protect women's rights, is trotting out the old and heinous "she was asking for it" canard. Women in bikinis, whether on the beach or in a picture, do not provide an excuse for violence. I find this far more troubling than whether the calendar is tasteless, unoriginal, etc.
