Dear Anon,

The phrase: "obscure references to Darfur..."

which you took out of context so that you could perceive and spin it to mean something different was directed at the people preaching at the young women and teen girls who are getting pregnant. Do you really think those pregnant teens in inner cities in the US can relate and comprehend what is going on in Darfur? Do these 13, 14, 15 year olds participate in political discussions about Darfur and the 'Ethnic Cleansing' evil that is happening there?

I think you are missing something in what these activists are doing, or maybe you don't recall being a teen or have never been young and without money, but Darfur for all it's horror, is not number one on their list. Thus, that issue is what one could call obscure. In the immediate reality of those who are faced with these choices, it is quite obscure. The people the message is aimed at are not experiencing it and have more immediate problems ( a baby inside their wombs) to deal with.

Darfur is clearly another topic and should not be used to promote an agenda that will only lessen the choices of these young women and girls in communities already lacking in resources. In fact, only someone who doesn't get what is happening there would use it this way.

I am trying to understand these activists

I've volunteered in a neighborhood clinic in a not so nice part of a city. I hear the shouts of these activists as extremely ignorant and shortsighted for a few reasons:

1. They are preaching to take away rights from people presumably unable to find other options.

2. They are ignoring the fact that just because you make something illegal or difficult doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Hangers anyone?

These young women need resources, and possibly professional medical help, not people shaming them or making obscure references to Darfur and Civil rights.

Too much weight

goes into the primaries. Think about the past elections. Dean won Iowa.

What if

George W. Bush were a woman? A woman who did what he has done, before office and within office? No need to mention everything, you all know the details.

Just take one of the facts and run with it for argument's sake: A woman, born of extreme privilege, cheats her way through school while doing coke and drinking her face off. Yeah, that would go over well. Can you think of the names SHE'D be called? It meant nothing to his votes. The same voters who said that didn't matter, also said he seemed like "a fun guy to have a beer with".

I don't want to have a beer with the President, I want the President to be too busy making the country better and fixing things! We don't have to like the President, but we have to believe this person will lead us in the right direction.

Where is our hero? I like Hil and I like Barak because they seem to want to make things better. Compared to Bush, I actually love them, but are we putting too much faith in one human being?

confused people?

I just read somewhere that voters in Iowa and NH "are favoring Obama or McCain". THE SAME VOTERS. Have they not noticed that these men could not be more different? From their records on votes, to basic philosophies. WHAT is going on?

imagining the new

Interesting article. I am so happy people are talking about this! That is what I'll take away from all of this. Not the snide comments and barbs aimed at everyone who speaks out, because you must know it's pointless to attack people you don't even know, but the discussion. It's meaningful and it matters for our country. You don't need to call Hillary or Obama or anyone else names. They all intend to do great things for our country!

Here's an idea to add to the thread: Why can't we vote for a brilliant strong black woman leader? How about a brilliant strong Asian woman? Where is she? I am looking, reading, and waiting. Please no one who has her name on an oil tanker, please. I want the pendulum shifted from corporate DEALS ( insert any color you choose into this idea, and it stands ) to the grassroots. I don't believe it can happen, that power shift. Green is the color of choice here.

I hope I am terribly wrong.

To be loved and loved alone

I don't mind the lack of monogamy nor the desire present for exploring some boundaries, but the lying and manipulation... that the part that is unforgivable. It seems a selfish and despicable thing to do to someone you love. It can also be a sick addiction, the ultimate and intoxicating rush of the new and different. There is no pain like betrayal.

Something isn't right LW, and you don't need to second guess yourself. That said, I have many friends who I don't share any bodily fluids with. OK, so it's just a phone and she only texts him intermittently (or regularly, what do you know?) and there is all this energy going into this wondering and pleading for answers. Maybe she is just a friend, maybe he wants her or maybe she wants him or... oh, the stories you can dream up! It just sounds exhausting!

This is where Cary's answer was brilliant. If you know, then you just know. Keep in mind (if you are able at this point) one critical fact: This has everything to do with him and nothing to do with you. Also, it isn't about the drunk girl. It's about his enabling or allowing or even extending invitations to someone. Someone who is not you.
