What the study is really saying

It does not matter if a black player fouls a black player or a white player. Or if a white player fouls a white player or a black player. What this study says (to me, anyway) is that regardless of who they are fouling, refs are slightly more likely to call a foul on a black player than a white player. So if Black Player and White Player commit the exact same foul in front of the exact same official, there will be different results depending on the race of the ref. In this example, if the player is black, a white ref will be more likely to call an identical foul on a black player than a white player; in essence, they'll be watching the black player more closely than the white player.

That's my take, anyway.

No surprises

Of course Cuban is going to stand by Nowitzski. The guy's a good player - in the regular season. I don't know, but this looks to be more of a coaching issue. The dude obviously has the skills, he just can't do shit in the postseason. I think you hit it on the head when you said that Johnson was just outcoached by Nelson. Where were the adjustments?

But the highlight of yesterday's yawner was Barkley's comments before the Warriors/Mavs game started about how thanks to Houston, he was going to miss the fight on Saturday. And then proceeded to slam the first round, something I'm figuring he gets paid an obscene amount of money to blather on about. Something tells me David Stern's not too happy with the slam-a-thon.

Here's a novel idea

You know, where I work (in an office), if I were to charge after somebody in a meeting that pissed me off, I'd probably be fired (not really doable in sports). If I slugged somebody, they'd probably call the cops.

Why don't they just use existing laws? Assault is a crime as far as I know. And every game I've been to there have been a ton of cops sitting there. Instead of these stupid unnecessary suspensions, just have the cops haul Horry off for assaulting Nash. Would what Stoudamire and Diaw did be considered assault or a crime in any way? No.

Way to screw up an otherwise great post-season, Stern. Now it's all but meaningless.

Full disclosure: I'm not a Suns fan or a Spurs fan. I'm, unfortunately, a Sonics fan. But I really don't like the Spurs.

Off Topic

Saw this article in the Seattle Times and thought some of you might dig it.

The Times ran a report on the 2000 UW Football team and how general thuggery and felonies were ignored or delayed until the end of the season. Interesting reading.

"Key UW linebacker played entire season after his bloody print was tied to shooting

The 2000 Huskies, winners of the Rose Bowl, stand as the UW's last great team. But an unprecedented look behind the scenes reveals a disturbing level of criminal conduct that was often excused or overlooked."

Seattle loves the Sonics

For years I'd get the 7 game package and supplement it with a couple of games that I wanted to see but weren't in the package. As soon as this new group took over, I lost interest. Went to only 2 games in 06-07. This year I didn't go to any. Barely watched them on tv. I watched a few games just to check out Durant. In a few years Seattle will have a great team. Or maybe Oklahoma City will have a great team.

Gotta hope one or all of the lawsuits work and get that ballsack Bennett to sell the team.

I'm heading to the rally this coming Monday in front of the courthouse in Seattle. Any other Seattle readers of King should do the same!

Thanks, King! I've been waiting for your perspective on this.

Boo hoo hoo

Get over it. Clinton blew a lead many thought couldn't be blown. I think both candidates are pretty lame, myself. Well, all three if you include the old man. As the primaries trudged along, it became clear that the Republicans probably had a point about Clinton over the years. We'll see about Obama. The only thing I can say with any certainty at all is that he probably won't be as horrible as Bush.

She has gotten it wrong

At pretty much every single turn, Stephanie's gotten it wrong. To each their own I guess. Caught the IMAX advance screening in Seattle last night and I was blown away. Best Batman move yet. I had no trouble separating the Joker from Ledger's overdose. Great, great performance, and I wasn't exactly a fan before this and fairly skeptical of all the raves that I'd been hearing for his work as the Joker.

This movie lives up to the hype.

But, hey. See it for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Couldn't have said it better myself, so I won't try.

Eh

To each their own. But sometimes this goes horribly awry.

I had a friend who worked in a predominantly black area of Chicago. Two of the kids she worked with were "Derricky" (pronounced Derrr-Ricky) because his mother was so high on crack at the time that she filled out the birth certificate incorrectly, meaning to write down Derrick, but forgetting where she was half-way through and changing it to Ricky.

And then there's the unfortunately you African-American male named "Aryan".

Fans get what they deserve

Where was the uproar when the Sonics were stolen by a bunch of hicks and Commandant Stern because Seattle wouldn't pony up for a new stadium? Where were the rest of the nation's sports fans? Where was King Kaufman? I think that whole travesty rated, what, one column?

So suck it up, Yankee fans (and people who live in NY that hate the Yankees). The corporations and rich white dudes win again. As usual. And we have nobody but ourselves to blame.

Still no love for Seattle

While still not as good as the '06 Cubs, the Mariners won 116 games in 2001.
