Original article: "The Golden Compass"

Agreed

I haven't read any of the Golden Compass books, but I went to see the movie anyway. Big mistake. The movie, while beautiful, hardly made sense.

[[SPOILERS!!]] Just one of several questions: Why would Nicole Kidman's character really give a hoot about whether or not the little girl is separated from her companion animal when her own animal is some sort of mentally challenged monkey (and why isn't her monket sentient?)? Is the character good or bad or both.. does she really care, is she really her mother? Why? I also find the idea of a truth compass pretty lame.. truth is murky, at best. Maybe the idea is done better in the books. [[END SPOILERS]]

As my partner said as we exited the movie, GC is all build up and no plot.. she felt like she was being set up for another $10 movie ticket. Yeck.

Fewer choices

I went costume shopping with a friend of mine recently. My friend is all about being slutty at anytime of year, but especially on Halloween. I've never been interested in being slutty (no I'm not the fat, ugly friend). Well, my friend found a costume right away. I couldn't find a SINGLE costume that wasn't slutty. My friend and I went over to the men's section to see what choices they have this year. There were a wide variety of fun costumes on the men's side. I'm 5'3, 115lbs and petite, so none of the men's costumes even came close to fitting on me.

I bought a pair of gothic angel wings, and I had to gather pieces of clothing that would fit along with my gothic theme. Basically, I had to make my own costume this year because I wasn't interested in being Whorathy or Sinderella. That really sucks. How long has it been this way?

I just thought I'd put a few words out there for the girls that want to have fun tonight but don't want to be slutty. Please make some costumes for us!

It if hasn't been said already...

There are still no-kill animal groups that adopt dogs to people without a 10 page contract and home visits. We adopted our dog from such a place. We simply paid an $80 fee and walked out with her under one condition. They said if we ever had any problems, if we ever didn't want her for any reason, their only stipulation was that we give her back to them rather than give her to someone else or take her to the pound. Fair enough.

We've had our dog for 4 years and haven't looked back. Fantastic dog.

Original article: How did the T get in LGBT?

I have to agree

I have advocated for including the "T", but over the years I have come to the understanding that the "T" really is different than "LGB." Butchy lesbians and queeny gay men are not evidence of membership in the "T" community. Legislators know when they pass LGB legislation, they are helping these butchy and queeny people and they pass the legislation anyway. When it comes to the "T", these same legislators get cold feet. Why? It's because being butchy or queeny isn't the same as living one's life as a different sex.

I used to advocate for "T" inclusion in "LGB" because there are good theoretical reasons for doing so. When I started to think honestly about the lived reality between being gay and being trans, I saw that there are critical differences that warrant a separate movement.

By the way, if you dig around, you'll find that there is and was TRANS resistance to being tacked onto "LGB." They didn't think their situation was the same as being gay (since most do not identify as gay).

LW, wait...

How do you know the guy is still actively looking for other women? A friend of mine left her profile up on J-date for a little while even after she met her boyfriend. She wasn't looking for something better, she was just too lazy to take the profile down. It really was innocent. I'd recommend asking this guy about the profile directly if it bothers you.

Original article: In meth we trust

Yeah...

I used to think this stuff was just white trash who-gives-a-shit-if-they-kill-themselves until my sister got hooked on it, moved 2000 miles away to California in the middle of the night without telling anyone (with a man 20 years younger than her that she just met). Pretty powerful stuff, it seems.

LW has had the misfortune...

of being published on a weekend. Now she is going to be picked apart for days. I'm pretty sure the horse is dead, folks. lol Anyway, I hope the LW took someone's advice on page 17ish and walked away from the computer.

Hmm...

LW, If you ever write another letter to an advice columnist (I know, I know), remember... your first mistake was opening your original letter to Cary with an insult to Cary. We like Cary. Viewing Cary as a "last resort" that you're "desperate enough" to consider is just insulting, and calling him a fellow dreamer doesn't make it better. It makes it sound like you're seeking life altering advice from a crazy person living in the woods behind your house.

I can't say that opening that way accounts for all of the stuff you're seeing in these letters, but I think it contributed to it because it made you sound arrogant and rude. So people read you as arrogant and rude through the whole letter. Know what I mean? It put a certain spin on things. I'd be careful with that sort of thing... that's why they say sit on angry emails at least 24 hours before putting them out. ;)
