Salon removed a letter attributed to Fred Bronson, Billboard magazine. Fred Bronson says he did not write the letter.
Thanks to everyone who pointed out the gaffe in the headline on the cover. We screwed up by using the word uppity -- and the error should have been caught before publication. We just fixed it -- the cover headline now matches the headline on the article, which was the correct version.
Just a quick note from me as managing editor about the concerns of Demond Mullins that he was misquoted in Helen Benedict's article. Yesterday he posted a letter in this thread to that effect (saying an earlier correction we had run wasn't adequate). He also sent the same letter directly to Salon via email. Salon takes complaints of this nature very seriously and we did indeed act and resolve the issue. As soon as we received Mullins's email, I immediately called him. I also consulted at length with the author late last night when I could finally reach her. After careful consideration, we posted a correction this morning.--Jeanne Carstensen, managing editor
