  • LS, you're a bit off

[Read the article: White House and guns: Stay the course]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The NRA and the NRA folks don't care very much about the booze and drug issues. Unless, it impacts the 2nd amendment. That is why the NRA has actively defended the 1st amendment. The right to speak is important to the right to defend the 2nd amendment. Oddly, the nation's founders also found the right to bear arms as important to protect the 1st amendment.

Compare and contrast that to the ACLU, which supports the collective rights view. They're more liberal than libertarian.

It is silly to equate 2nd amendment supporters and social conservatives. Many of us don't appreciate anyone who would deprive us of any right. In other words, many of us a civil libertarians.

  • distressing to this conservative too

[Read the article: Supreme Court upholds a federal abortion ban]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Firstly, don't paint us conservatives with such a wide brush. We view the evangelical christians and the bush white house as a bunch of reactionaries. They are not conservative, please don't honor them as conservatives. Try the terms "religious fundamentalist" or "reactionary". Quit telling me I am a right to lifer because someday I may tire of correcting you and become one out of spite.

Secondly, the court's strict constructivists claim to take the constitution at face value. That is why they say that abortion should be a state issue. By letting a federal ban stay in place, they are violating the basic precepts of constructionism.

Finally, the Roe v Wade proponents had better pull their heads out of their asses and read the majority opinion. I know from personal experience that anti-abortionists are far more likely to have educated themselves by reading it. The entire trimester argument is based on medical capabilities back in 1973. Over 30 years ago. A much younger fetus is now viable. If you keep hanging your coats on that flimsy hanger, don't cry when it breaks. New arguments must be found.

Hints: 1st trimester, fetus not viable implies insuficient state interest in the fetus' life.

2nd trimester, fetus more likely to survive so state can regulate in ways reasonably related to maternal health.

3rd trimester, fetus is viable, so it begins aquiring constitutional rights and the state can regulate, except when necessary to protect the health of the mother.

  • Here we go again

[Read the article: Repeal the Second Amendment]

Please make Shapiro the London bureau chief. Then he can be safe. He will probably get the crap beat out of him a few times, but at least it won't be GUN violence.

The definition of a liberal is someone who is terrified by the concept that someone, somewhere, will do something for themselves. Yup, get the feds to regulate everything. Quit crying when they regulate abortion. It is what you want.

Please Wally, leave this country. Go to a place where the government doles out rights to the people. We don't need you here because we need to push back the infringements on the 1st, 4th, 5th, 14th, etc (sigh) amendments. Those are ours and the government has no right to them. And you, Wally, who want to give up rights so you can feel secure, only deserve the rights that other men deign to allow you.

You're right. I too miss the old Salon. The new one is trying to be the voice of the left. Great. walsh seems to think the success of Air America Radio is a good model for Salon.

I also resent that j. walsh called me a friggen' liberal. I'm a conservative salon reader. Based on the letters section, I think there are a lot of conservative salon readers.

Someone called walsh a centrist? bullshit. That's like looking at Hitler (right wingnut), then Stalin (left wingnut), and saying Mussolini is centrist.

Walsh is way liberal. She's out and she's proud. I can respect her for that. Too bad she's trying to make salon suck. Not suck.com, just suck. Suck.com was great.

  • how lame

[Read the article: The NRA view of school shootings, in pictures]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

A bunch of anti gunners get peeved when their actions are accurately predicted. After all, they did use the tragedy as an opportunity to push their agenda.

Then they have the a brainstorm - why didn't the NRA lead the defense against the patriot act and other civil rights attacks? Perhaps because the right to bear arms wasn't being attacked. Why don't they also ask why planned parenthood didn't step up?

It is amazing that they actually wonder why the NRA didn't do more than the so called opposition party (aka democrats, recently emboldened by focus groups studies)

Isn't it funny that the most active group standing for our rights is the librarians? You know, bookish quiet people. Most of those librarians have government jobs, so they're really risking it all.

Maybe we can all agree on one thing. No librarian should ever pay for their own drink again.

  • Hell no it doesn't count

[Read the article: She said it! Sort of]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

How about "giving the president the authority to use any force he felt like in attacking Iraq with no credible proof regarding WMDs, terrorist ties, or threat to the region."

Quit trying to absolve hilary. It cheapens you.

  • well, duh!

[Read the article: Hear me now and believe me later]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Given a choice between bush and kerry, they were right. It's the stupid democrats fault kerry was on the ticket. electable my ass.

Now hilary is anointed electable. Different name, same arguments, same result.

If you put kerry on the ticket, you share the blame.

  • Twits

[Read the article: Hear me now and believe me later]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Now you're projecting your own beliefs onto kerry. He was, and still is, a piece of shit. Bush is also a piece of shit. You wanted kerry because he voted for the war? for the patriot act? because he has the same skull and bones connections as bush?

Yeah kerry showed so much courage when he took the safe road on the iraq war resolution. Strength of character? Bullshit. kerry has no moral compass at all, hence no character to be strong about.

Be contemptuous of me. It's mutual. You made the wrong decision and now you're "staying the course".

Suck up the blame. Repeat your mistake with another "electable" candidate.
