What kind of security do you actually need?

It's all well and good to condemn web apps for lack of security, but so what? How much do you need for those term papers and recipes? It's simply a matter of what angle you want to position the app for. Consider the merging of web office apps with email and Facebook. It's actually a pretty neat fit if you combine it with something like Netmeeting.

And if it will save my nonprofit the agony of MS "Patch Tuesday" and trying to fix this week's eleventy thousand security patches then maybe it's not such a bad thing.

And for the record I use Google apps and I'm not thrilled with them. Not a big fan, personally of the web app business but I can see how it might be a fit for someone.

Original article: The Exxon recession

Venezuela has 25% inflation and Chavez is squandering his billions

Buying Russian fighter bombers, supporting FARC and generally fomenting revolution throughout the continent. He's also embroiled in a dispute with Brazil over hundreds of millions of dollars of electric utility bills he refuses to pay them because he doesn't believe that paying bills is the "Bolivarian thing to do.

Keep in mind that Venezuelan oil is very low quality and large investments have to be made to get it out of the ground and transport it. It's heavy and laden with sulfur, like Russian oil. Which makes the mechanics of getting it expensive and the infrastructure breaks down and needs frequent repair. Investments that Venezuela refuses to make because, as I said, they're too busy buying fleets of Russian MiG-29's, Su-27's and coastal defense ships, brigades of anti aircraft missiles and hundreds of millions of dollars in 'support' to FARC.

Nationalized systems often become the personal purses of 'Great and Dear Leaders'. Particularly extractive industries like oil, gas, mining. Because as long as you can dig or pump money out of the ground, it's largesse for all your cronies and supporters. When times are bad, just claim that the Great Satan/Evil Yanquis/Zionists, etc are plotting to destroy your country, let the mobs boil out into the streets and everyone gets along.

So don't, asshole. No one's forcing you, asshole. Go use something else, you asshole retard. By all means. And while you're at it, asshole, use whole disk PGP encryption, asshole. Because seriously, asshole, if you're using MS Office today to protect National Secrets, asshole, you're probably making a big asshole mistake. Like I said asshole, and to you too, Nancy, if security is a huge deal for you, then don't use it. Don't use IM either. And don't do most of things I'm sure you do do today that puts your data at risk. Such as storing passwords on your machine or credit card info.

See, that wasn't too hard for you to think through, was it, ASSHOLE?

About 75% of all home desktop users never bother to install or run AV tools or firewalls. Keeping all your asshole data local is therefore a complete waste of time if you think it's more secure.

PS: wear velcro shoes, like all the other re-re's.

Nationalization is a bad idea it ends badly

Stay on topic. Not everything is an opportunity for you to digress into your personal blogfest. And if supporting drug lords is your particular view of 'freedom' have at it. It's really nothing more than I would expect of the readers here. Oil for cocaine. There's a great idea. Viva la Revolucion.

I wish it would matter

If the Dems get anything less than 535 seats in Congress they'll still be too timid.

Who will you blame if you lose?

Because that's all politics is about anymore.

What makes you believe

That as a result the country will be any less insanely polarized. It will be, only the numbers in each camp will be slightly different.

this is a good example of what's profoundly wrong with the net

It's undiscriminating and even lightweights like Salon give equal air time to nutcases as they do anyone else. What next "War Room" will you slap up some blog from the Gay Black Midget Hentai Furry Star Trek Porn bloggers for McCain? D'ya think anything is too inconsequential? This is why Slate kicks your ass every day.
