  • Karen M, Derbie, some numbers

If anyone else has links or support for that, go ahead and poach my thunder... otherwise, I'll follow up later.

The numbers were in Froomkin: they were 43% in Dec '05 and 57% in Dec '06 supported impeachment if it could be shown that President Bush had lied to take us to war in Iraq. More recently, 39% seem to support it no matter what.

I have wondered whether the iPod story has had any impact on Cheney, given his heart condition. I don't know, though, whether he has a pacemaker, only that he has an iPod. (which brings us back, potentially, to that other meaning of bow)

He has, by my count, 4 arteries bypassed, one stent, and an implanted defibrillator. It's possible that the trouble he's having with his leg veins is because so many have been used to patch him up. If you played the defib as an iPod he would truly be shocked at what young people are listening to these days. In my very darkest moments I remember that there are only 5 coronary arteries and you can't replace them twice. In my lighter moments, I remember that evidence from his behavior over the last 30 years shows that contrary to my count above, Cheney doesn't really have a heart, his compassion meter's been running on empty since the Ford administration.

  • I think its the character bubble that is about to burst

The big shift that produced character as being more important than competence.

It is an entangled bubble that includes, as presentations, the family values chanters, the pro-natalism movement, excessive religiosity, squeaky clean candidates, media handlers, never changing one's mind, soldier of fortune mentality, projected images.

It's rotten in its core, perhaps it will collapse inward and go nova. Novae sprinkle space with new elements that create life.

On the other thread, there seemed to be a fair number of people who had a deep acquaintance with the Banality of Evil of Hannah Arendt. I don't, so I wanted to ask,

Do present day situations include both the banality of evil that commits atrocity, Hannah Arendt's "man in the glass booth" for whom "On trial were his deeds..." and the banality of evil that submits to it, Robert Shaw's "man in the glass booth" who is haunted by, to use Arendt's words "Why did they go to their deaths like lambs to slaughter?"

Does the public that was mislead bear any responsibility if the leaders are still doing wrong in their name so many years later? If the press is still able to dodge the news so many years later?

There used to be that song about "how the winds are laughing..."

No one now living has the right, for example, to accuse the inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto of complicity in their own demise; moreover it's worth noting that at the end they fought heroically to exact a price from their tormentors, just as the passengers on flight 93 did.

Interesting to mention this! There is some dispute that the song I quoted from, "Dona, Dona" was sung in the Warsaw Ghetto (it's originally a Yiddish song). Also because I'm wondering how long we wait for our representatives, and for our press, before it's time that we act ourselves, and if it comes to that, what to do.
