  • Conspiracies are easy

[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

First, let me note that I do not remotely believe most of the conspiracies surrounding 9/11. I do, however, believe that very high-up officials knew something was going to happen and did nothing to prevent it so they could enact their Neocon insanity.

For those that think that conspiracies are too difficult because of the number of people involved and eventually someone will talk the easy way to debunk you is this: WMD.

What percentage of Americans thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction? 70%? 80%? A small group distorts the facts, cherry picks evidence, uses fear mongering and just flat lies in order to invade an oil rich Arab nation and it works perfectly.

The rest of world, including our allies and the UN, was saying that Saddam had nothing to threaten the US with, but the Cabal managed to get the vast majority of Americans to join their conspiracy.

  • Joe Lieberman insults democracy

    [Read the article: Lieberman wins!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Joe Lieberman is an insult to democratic process. He claims that he and President Bush are promoting democracy in the Arab world, yet he is ignoring honest results and finding technicalities to keep himself in power. What message does this send to the Middle East?

Add in obvious corruption and shenanigan in Florida, voter suppression and questionable results from electronic voting machines in Ohio and it become clear why the U.S. has become so disliked and distrusted around the globe.

Joe Lieberman cannot claim to be supporting democracy in the Middle East while he is trying so hard to thwart it here.

  • Not Just a Post 9/11 issue

[Read the article: Iraq: Why the media failed]

I was working at ABC News with Ted Koppel and his executive producer Tom Bettag. It was clear, even before the war, that these were two cowed, beaten, sad, little men.

Bettag even once told a group of us that we had to be very careful about how we “present the facts.” He went on to say how after the 1980 Reagan/Carter debate they had run a “fact check” piece that had gotten him in hot water. Nightline had reported, correctly, that Carter had his facts correct while Reagan had many numbers wrong. But republicans were “angry” and so “we have to be careful.” The facts were on his side but he caved. As early as 1980 Bettag showed he was a pure coward. It is no surprise he rose in the ranks of corporate broadcasting.

By riding in the back of Hummer as a “embed” Koppel lost any last pretext of journalistic integrity. Later when Nightline created a minor controversy by airing a list of soldiers who have died in Iraq (The Fallen), Koppel said, “You are convinced that I am opposed to the war. I am not…” Koppel had been at ABC 41 years, he had millions of dollars, and his own live television news program, yet he shrank and cowed to the bitter end.

At the time the list was only 721 names. It’s now 3,292 and growing. Someone at Salon should ask Koppel if he still supports the war.

  • Highlights from the Debate

    [Read the article: Various items]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    1. The republican party is so devoid of substance that they are reduced to jokes about John Edwards hair.

    This reeks of desperation.

    This REEKS of desperation.

John Edwards should just come out and say those exact words. "Reeks of desperation."

    2. Republican's are so embarrassed by George W. Bush they won't even talk about him.

George is such an embarrassment to the family that NOONE WILL TALK ABOUT HIM.

He's worse than my alcoholic uncle that spent time in prison.

They are so embarrassed by their own leader they won't even talk about him.

  • What is wrong with a little protest?

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]

How low has the US image sunk in the world?

    They boo Miss USA.

The U.S. has the world’s largest prison population per share of overall population, yet still has an extremely high violent crime rate. The U.S. runs secret prison to torture people. A recent international poll had the U.S. lined up with Iran and North Korea as the least trusted or respected nations in the world.

I hate to see the US women's team in those ugly gold uniforms, but considering the Bush Administations record towards woman I completely support their decision.

Considering W. is at 26% approval in the Newsweek poll the vast majority of us would wear gold.

  • The Surge

[Read the article: The Iraq war is lost]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The surge is an admission that 4 years into combat more troops are needed just to restore some sense of order. You are admitting that only a massive military presence will maintain order in Iraq. This is defeat.

All the surge supports are living in denial about why the surge was necessary. Sorry "Hornet Driver" but needing a huge military presence to control a population is NOT creating a stable democracy. Take a deep breath and an honest look, either you hold Iraq under your thumb or you lose control. Even if the surge is successful it is only successful at keeping a population at bay using military force. In no way is this creating a more stable Middle East.

I love America, but this a disaster.

  • Don't fly to see your family

[Read the article: Should I stay East or go West?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There is an unknown space between my sister's family in Iowa and my invented, beautiful life in Canada. And that space hurts, especially from the horrific airport security that terrifies my 3-year-old.

I hope in time our families will be able to move across that unknown space, in alternate years, perhaps buying a vacation place in South Dakota to split the difference. But whatever the solution is, it will involve a desolate border crossing on the prairie, and not a hub stop in Denver.

Now more than ever, you cannot fly to see your family. Having lived a little bit of east and west in the last two years, I can attest that you can find whatever you need wherever you are. But you can't bring your family closer.
