Christ. How many of the responders to Cary's column are drunks ar close family members to? Salon seems to employ the patron saint/columnist of alcoholics.

Oh, and anyone who rationalizes a need to drink based on the supposed benefits of being withdrawn from booze is about certain to be an alcoholic.

  • What is This, Exactly ?

If Cary's judgement is such that he truly believes this letter is authentic in any meaningful sense, I would submit that this is convincing evidence of his inability to skillfully advise anyone on anything. Conversely, if he is able to smell the BS, why does he publish and comment upon this as though he hadn't?

I have always noticed, of course, that CT labors through an epic case of verbal diarrhea, unable to write anything of real consequence. Usually, though, he serves to select letters that *others* might usefully debate and opine upon.

I fail to see any point in publishing this obvious fabrication from this untalented fabulist.

  • The "Big Fuss"

If any response so far can be accurately described as a "Big Fuss," I suspect that it is because this letter is inane and boring. I don't believe there is any real confusion about the title of Cary's column, though thankfully, we can now be SURE of that.

People read today's feature hoping to find something they might identify or assist with and instead got poorly constructed insincere tripe.

" It is tragic that Liberalism has been reduced to this; defending a fucking arsonist."

I don't know if I would ascribe the tragedy to Liberalism, so much as Salon, but this is pitiful. If this woman is innocent and the jury got it wrong, then let's have an article about that.

This garbage is a bunch of mushy relativist drivel. This is not much different from defending islamofacists because you believe they make good points regarding the moral and intellectual bankrupty of consumerism and the injustice of imperialist foreign poicy. If this woman is guilty of looking out while this act occurred, 20 years seems a little light, actually.

  • This is Pathetic

Cary is a congenital nitwit. It was therefore no surprise to see him spend the majority of his response of issues NOT raised by the LW. I guess that's kind of his "thing." I was a bit taken aback by the graphic detail he made up - it sounds a bit like Cary wishes he were powerless in a room full of Marines. In his fantasy, they are killing machines.....

The responses of the vast majority of commenters are what really stand out, though. Most are packed with BS positioned as life experience, but really learned from after school specials and your repressive 7th grade health ed. The tone is hysterical. In the real world, the slut doesn't have AIDS. If she did, the chances of woman-to-man transmission of AIDS via vaginal intercourse is minute. HPV is a different story; based on the LW info she has that many times over.

I don't condone her behavior; I would no more have unprotected sex with a stranger (of anything like one) than play in traffic on the interstate. The hysterical shrieking and "safe sex talking points" regurgitations show that I was wrong in high school; I guess some people really ARE dumb enough to be brainwashed by simplistic propaganda.

Read amerigo for a reality-based approach to these behavioral problems.

But it at least puts some perspective against CTs panting and raving about group sex gang-a-bang freakout trauma party goin' on.
