First, what is missing is any description about how the husband and wife are getting along. Maybe their relationship is one foot in the grave and he is reaching out to anyone who might show him the affection she has long shut off. Then again, maybe is some self conceived Lothario who thinks all woman are like mountains to be climbed and she is just one more quest, or maybe the wife and him have had a long talk about the writer's apparant lack of any relationship which leads here to slum at married friends and maybe she just needs to be laid and he was picked to "save" her, thus the wife going to bed early "wink wink nod nod." The point is, what is this woman doing wandering from house to house with no seeming attachment? Honestly, the answer to your situation was so bloody obvious I think your real query wasn't how to deal with being a "victim" and saving his "wife" but weather you should take advantage of the situation or tell his wife to stick it to him. Do you imagine the French felt the same about putting all their eggs in Dien Bien Phu? Sure, what if it failed, they would just keep doing what they were doing and keep Indochina? Is that what anyone thinks will happen if we toss in our last reserves and break the military for one last "surge"?

This is going to be bad, very very bad.

Even the right agrees the chance of success is slim. What they won't accept is the risk of failure is so great it far outweighs the chance of success. Keep things the same and refuse to admit we are leaving and we have negotiating room, with the different insurgent groups, militias, Iraqi government and Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iran. However, declare we are going for "all in" one one last pitched battle in Baghdad then we'd better win. If not, the biggest fear of this administration "That the enemy will be empowered" will prove true in spades. The insurgents will believe they can defeat the Yankee devil and those sitting on the fence will join them, backing a seeming winner. Eight months and a thousand casualties from now the insurgency and sectarian violence will grow tenfold and no group will have any reason to join us or the government and no other country will bother to listen or fear us.

George Bush is effectively stating to the Middle East that this surge represents the best American can do militarily. If it fails, the US has failed. That is the worst that can happen.

Knowing no one with any understanding of what the hell is going on supports this one has to wonder if Bush is some alter Hitler a messianic psychotic who is so bent on God on his side that he might believe that our country has let him down and deserves to be destroyed for not realizing his vision ("Is New York burning?") or that whoever is pulling the strings has their own reasons for seeing this country brought down the same way the USSR was brought down in Afganistan. Either we are led by a megolmaniac out of control or a cabal of financial interests who see their money better spent without a strong America.

Either way this administration has to be removed and as quickly as possible. As bad as Nixon was, we had the benefit of people in higher places who knowing he'd gone too far put on the brakes. I fear we don't have those elder gentlemen this time around and it is up to us and our Congress. Let's hope it's not too late.
