Oh be still my beating anti-semitic terrorist loving American hating heart. A majority of Connecticut Dems stood up, brushed off the mud and voted their principles.
It isn't just the war, or the kiss, or the venality of his campaign; it was 2000. How thing might have been different if he didn't make his VP choice all about him, turn lap puppy to Cheney in the debates and completely failed to carry the one state that should have loved his "faith" as much or more than CT, Florida.
This is just the beginning, hopefully, of cutting out the cancer that afflicted our party and bringing our values home.
Let the punditry attacks begin. Bunker Hill is ours!
After the 2004 election, the "free" press was quick to coronate the evangalists as the source of Bush's victory and the new political power. It only took a few months of reading the exit polls for the truth to come out, that overal concern for security drove the electorate, not family value issues, and for the evangalists to disappear from the radar screen. Six months after the election an evangalical talking head couldn't buy his way onto MSNBC.
I bring this up because the day after Lamont's victory, it seemed that political bloggers were being crowned this year's evangalicals. Odd, that no one bothered to aske if any average CT voter actually read a political blog. Most don't even read the editorial pages. Why would they waste time on Daily Kos, let alone "My screaming anti-war liberal blog" The only impact blogs had on this election is that a lot of them hoped Lamont would win.
I bring this up because while the MSM is hyperventilating over obscure political blogs and the "radical fringe" of the Democratic Party, a real movement appears to be taking shape. If you survey nationwide newspaper editorials you may notice a growing number of writers criticizing the Bush administration for using the "war on terror" to silence critics calling their attempts to paint Dems as soft on terror not just unfounded but laughable. Better yet, more and more critics are standing up to say the administration, not the Dems, are the ones most responsible for undermining national security.
Most significant is that Cheney's statements after the Lamont victory appear to have created as more critical responses than positive ones. That is a sea change from 2004. One exampe is Boston Globes Robert Kuttner on Saturday, August 12. Slate's William Sarlatan provides another.
There may be a "tipping point" here. I wish to help it along by suggesting that if you find a good article pointing out the fallacy and evil of using god, flag and fear to attack your critics, send it to all the people you used to send those e-mails about Bill Gates paying you to test his latest software, or happy thoughts that would earn you your greatest wish. Want to get your wish? Mail a thoughtful article on what is wrong with this administration and this war to ten people and you may really get your wish.
If the growing number of articles are any indication, the people who have been fooled some of the time, are no longer willing to be fooled. Let's help them. Instead of worrying if the Dems will get it or how to defend against the latest psychotic blatherings of Dick Cheney, do something positive. If you find a good critique of this administration on the net, send it along. Maybe Salon can create a database for all entries so we can add and share them. The more people who point out the emperor has no clothes the more likely there will be regime change come November.
