  • Hubris? No...

[Read the article: Big speech, big venue]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Just recognition of the fact that anybody who's anybody will want to see this speech in person, regardless of whether they are Hillary supporters, or even Democrats...and if Obama wants to do it ala Shea Stadium style, then so be it.

And enough with the needless Nazi Party references. That would be more "believeable" if it were a Republican in a sea of old white folks...but seeing as how, ya know, it's going to be a relatively diverse crowd (which was NOT one of the Nazi Party's strengths, given their pursuit of eugenics), I think we can dispense with the bad history references this time around.

It's a clever move by Obama...it is a Hail-Mary toss of sorts, because we don't know if 76,000 people (or even 30,000 people) will show-up to such an event...but if it works, folks will be looking at McCain's acceptance speech and say "Wow, you guys are so out of touch with America." Which would be a true statement, and Obama is banking on that.

  • Quack-shack docs...

[Read the article: Where have you gone, Marcus Welby?]

Are unfortunately the wave of the future. And while I am happy about having a PCP still that I've seen for 10 years now, I know I'm lucky and that he will retire someday soon.

I would be less worried about this if pharmacology in this country was greatly reformed. For example, penicillan is (or I heard it used to be) over the counter in the U.K....why do we have still get a prescription for that? In fact, as smarter consumers, we should be able to self-diagnose ourselves better...and the tools are out there for this (hello, internet in the house, anyone?)...but for some reason, when it comes to the drug aspect, we are still limiting ourselves.

Despite these reservations, I'm still not entirely sure I agree with the premise of this article. Is it possible now that we don't need PCPs as much as we used to? 80 years ago, most people didn't know squat about medical conditions and ailments. Let's face it, the phrase "Put some butter on it" as the cure-all for any scratches is still probably memorable for our grandparents. And we are only a couple of centuries removed from the days of using leeches to cure ailments. So yeah, we have become better educated about illness and how to treat or prevent it.

BTW, maybe I missed this, but did the author even try to explain the Dr. Marcus Welby reference? Most people under the age of 30 won't even get that, unless syndicated TV ran that show a lot (it sure didn't here in Dallas...when I saw Dr. Marcus Welby MD for the first time about 7 years ago, my first reaction was "Hey, it's that guy from Father Knows Best!")

  • Ship of fools...

[Read the article: I'm sleeping with my best friend's fiancé ]

You can either run like a rat off of a sinking ship, or you can cause complete pain and misery to your friend...or you can live in guilt forever and ever, then run the risk of this little event slipping out in conversation someday, THEN live to see your friend go through MORE pain and misery + your own guilt....

So again, back to my original suggestion about rats and sinking ships...you blew it, lady, now it's time to enter the witness protection program.

And you call the guy a "good person"...you're an ass for rationalizing his behavior...

*PS - This only applies if this is a REAL letter...it's brevity makes me wonder.

  • Bigger question on this issue is...

[Read the article: Rush Limbaugh was right]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why did Obama AND McCain both condemn the cover?

Has anybody asked that question yet?

  • I guess I'm in the minority on this one...

When I say I actually LOVED Batman Begins, more so that Batman 1989. I will admit that it was a little hard to follow the first time around, especially the way the camera work was done during the combat sequences. But after the 2nd. viewing, I begin to catch all of the little touches about the film that made it truly funny to watch. I don't know why so many folks claim that it had a weak storyline, or that Bale was too moody or whatever. Jesus Fucking Christ, it's a movie about a guy in a bat suit, based on a comic book character...this isn't Shakespeare, guys...and frankly, I'd rather go watch this or the "The Prestige" than Shakespeare on screen any day.

And no, it's not Hitchcock-fair neither...but Hitchcock never did a movie based on a comic book, and I'm sure he would have thought of such an idea as ludicrious and beneath him 50 years ago. So I guess we'll never know how Nolan measures up to Hitchcock in the literal sense, seeing as how neither director makes the same kind of films per se. But again, who fucking cares? Stephanie Z does, but I can pretty much bank on liking anything she doesn't like...

BTW, I love Hitchcock films too...but I'm not going compare every other director to him, or Spielberg, or Kubrick, or anyone else...new directors have new and different styles, it's not fair for critics to compare them to the cinematic "Greats."

  • I guess maybe this has some kind of European sensibility to it...

Because, at a glance to me, it's a story about a child finding out that her mom used to be a slut, and now she, her ex-whore mom, and her 3 dupes "merrily" get to bog us down for the next 2 hours in a dancing/singing-festival of a movie as we anxiously (*YAWN*) wait to see which of these 3 is the lucky father. On a beautiful Greek Isle no less, wearing beautiful, colorful clothes...PULEEZZZE!!!

It's times like this that I truly value the woman I'm married to. Because rather than wanting to drag me to go see this gay-ass film, her initial comment when seeing the trailers for this mess was "Isn't it true that people in Greece don't bathe very often? What's wrong with this picture?"
