Interesting article about a topic that's getting flogged to death already...
[Read the article: Killer reflection]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"The degree to which these paired memes -- "smart but quiet" and "fundamentally foreign" -- are repeated in the coverage of these two crimes is striking."
It's sad to see any kind of racism, or stereotypical thinking, in our society...but for me, it's interesting to see how other minority groups view this kind of event. I can definitely say (from my own experience) that the African Ams. I know will look at these kinds of statements and basically shrug it off and say, "Well, at least it's not as bad as being black in America." My retort to this is typically "Then why don't you see more African Ams. go on killing rampages?" To which I get a response along the lines of because-that's-what-the-Man- want's-us-to-do,-and-we-won't-give-him-the pleasure...
The author does have a good point about how stereotypes are playing out in the media on this incident, though. For his benefit, I'll at least go so far to say that when I heard about the VT slaughter taking place, my first response (aside from sadness and concern) was: "Great, one of my cousins went insane again..."
Sign,
A White Guy

Great article...
[Read the article: The oldest story ever written]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]See, this is why I like coming to this website...I actually learned something new today (about a story we had to read in college, no less), and now I'm more inclined than ever before to get this book, then re-read Gilgamesh in my college lit. book (yes, I still have mine...there were a few stories I actually liked in it).

I knew Cary would publish this letter, for all to comment on...
[Read the article: My vegan friend insists I justify myself]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Even god prefers meat as evidenced by the story of Cain and Abel. Abel offered a meat sacrifice and Cain offered a vegan sacrifice and guess who got rejected and ended up killing his brother? That's right, the Vegan.
Don't forget Hitler."
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! That'll really get the vegans going...notice I don't put a capital V there, like some of my vegan friends do...it's not a f***ing title or something, jez!
I actually sympathize with vegetarians that don't eat meat for moral reasons...but I really don't like the Nazi vegans that have to remind me every time I bite into my beefy-burrito that it's immoral to do so. It would be just as bad as Pentacostal preacher yelling "You're going to Hell!" everytime two people lay down and have intercourse outside of marriage...or hearing the same thing from a Jew or Muslim everytime someone eats pork-rines. In fact, the vegans are just as bad as those fanatical member's of Jesus' Fan Club...but you could never convince them of that.
The LW needs to DTMFA this so-called friend of theirs...maybe it's a non-issue since they live so far apart, but Cary's advice is spot on again. People who live in the world of absolutes don't need friends like you who live in the Real World.
So...Don't just eat that hamburger...EAT THE HELL OUT OF IT!!!!

To the Baldwin-haters...
[Read the article: When good actors do bad things]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Is there a parent in the world who hasn't been let down by an offspring? We expect narcissism from children Ireland's age....but 46y/o father's don't get a free pass in that domain when dealing with their children."
No, he doesn't get a free pass...but to think his ex-wife isn't helping the situation in this ugly custody dispute is being too generous...it's not like we are throwing her under the bus here, but lets face it, who would have released that kind of voicemail msg? Ireland? The cellphone company? No, the "other side" did. And Alec B. is perfectly justified in calling Kim B. to the mat for it.
And I also agree with other posters that the Tom Cruise comparison doesn't apply here. I think Nick Nolte has more in common with Cruise than Alec Baldwin, because Nolte (ala Prince of Tides, North Dallas Fortys, etc.) has tried for years to come off as the sensitive lead man guy...while being a complete sexist pig off-screen. Now that Nolte is more of a curmudgeon on screen, it's a little easier for me to take his performances seriously.

I knew this was going to happen...
[Read the article: "Brothers"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I always prided Salon on being independent and beholden to no one...but alas, David Talbot has once again used this "independent" form to promulgate more conspiratorial crap that about some f'ing assasination that happened...how long ago now? Let me count...sorry, too far back for this Gen Xer to care!
I'm a student and dedicated reader of history...but this mental masterbation over the Kennedy shooting is just plain useless now...it's the mother of all conspiracies, yadi-yada, alright, we get it already...so what, that doesn't help us get our boys out of Iraq any faster...
