Could somebody please explain...
[Read the article: Supreme Court restores habeas corpus, strikes down key part of Military Commissions Act]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]... what great difficulty would be caused by treating the Girmo detainees in accordance with the Geneva Convention?

[Read the article: Saudi Arabia to the rescue?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]this shit needs to fucking stop...where's the fucking government?
I think they're busy lending money at 2.25% to prop up the economy, and investment banks are lending the money to hedge funds to speculate on oil.

@Ken Schellenberg
[Read the article: McCain's new ad goes green]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Gee, wasn't this what the GOP called "flip-flopping" 4 years ago?
Flip-flopping is so yesterday because it requires time to pass between contradictory statements. McCain is using the new advanced state-of-the-art technique of simultaneous parallel contradictions.
The bottom line is that *nobody* who votes for McCain will have any clue what they will actually get if he wins.

He's probably right
[Read the article: McCain advisor sees political advantage in terror attack]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In fact, I'm sort of expecting an attack on the U.S. sometime in October.
Osama has said he wants to drive the U.S. into bankruptcy. The war in Iraq is helping Osama to achieve this goal, and McCain is just about certain to keep the war in Iraq going a lot longer if he gets elected.
There's also the possibility that another attack would give Bush an excuse to declare an emergency and cancel the election. That would let him wreck this country even faster than McCain ever could.

[Read the article: McCain advisor sees political advantage in terror attack]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You don't understand the reich-wing mentality.
Another attack would be touted as proof that we haven't done enough of what the reich-wingers say is necessary. They'll tell us that Bush tried the best he could but that damned "Constitution" thing just made the job impossible. We'll get hit with a media blitz about how awful the attack was and how important it is to give Bush every power he might need to combat the menace.
Maybe congress will even name the bill "The Enabling Act".

@Event Horizon
[Read the article: Why $140-a-barrel oil is no surprise]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What "we" should be doing is simply resuming oil drilling and exploration wherever we can, so that America can continue to grow.
The problem with that plan is that the U.S. is responsible for about 25% of the world's oil consumption, but only has about 2% or 3% of the world's supply of oil. Even if we were able to make new oil fields productive tomorrow, we'd just use up our small supply of oil all the faster and we'd be screwed even worse when that started to run out.

[Read the article: More fun with reverse globalization]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Gasoline is highly subsidized in China
The true cost is massive debt for the Chinese economy.
I don't think so. The last time I checked, the U.S. was picking up the tab by buying so much stuff from China.

@The Reality Kid
[Read the article: Obama will "continue to refine" Iraq policy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In any and all events, Obama's (and McCain's) position will be shaped by the terms and conditions of the security and status of forces agreements being negotiated as we speak. Stop pretending otherwise.
How will Bush make his agreements binding on his successor?
-
God forbid...
[Read the article: Wielding the conservative veto pen]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Miller's third "untouchable" is Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, another McCain buddy, who is "not a conservative, but rather a populist who has assumed conservative positions on a few issues."
God forbid we should have anyone in an administration who actually gives a rat's patootie about the people. That sort of thing simply cannot be tolerated.

I beg to differ
[Read the article: Betrayed by Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]... but he's counting on supporters having no place else to go.
Obama has demonstrated that it doesn't matter who gets elected.
Supposedly he made this decision because the political calculus said he had to do it to appeal to more moderate voters. The problem with this logic is that the political calculus will always dictate support for special interests. The corporate media manipulates public opinion to make it so.
So, we can chose McCain, who will willingly screw the country, or we can chose Obama, who will reluctantly do exactly the same thing because he thought he had to for political reasons. Either way the result is the same.

@Pharnick
[Read the article: Betrayed by Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If he voted no, we would have seen the "Obama Soft on Terror!" ads in November and it might have lost him the election.
So instead, we will see ads about how Obama doesn't keep his promises and he'll still lose the election.
This was a lose-lose situation for Obama. He could has chosen to lose with dignity, but instead he chose to lose with shame.

@AKA Smith
[Read the article: Betrayed by Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Some remaining ObamaBOT will say that Hillary voted against the FISA capitulation just to make Obama look bad in contrast.
If you were so certain that this would happen, then why did you spoil it by jumping the gun and saying it first yourself?

Flat tire
[Read the article: Betrayed by Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think Obama is going to wake up tomorrow and find that he has let the enthusiasm out of his campaign. From now on, he's obviously just another politician who says and does what he thinks is needed to win.
I unsubscribed from his mailing list today. I won't be making any more contributions. If he's going to vote the way the lobbyists want, then let the lobbyists foot the bill for his campaign. I'd be an idiot to foot the bill for them.

@ceytron
[Read the article: Betrayed by Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Obama was smart not to give them ammunition, and after the grueling campaign of John "I voted for it before I voted against it" Kerry, Obama's keen political skill is a breath of fresh air.
Perhaps, but he has given them even more powerful ammunition in its place: No matter what Obama promises, McCain can counter him by pointing out his failure to live up to his promise on FISA.
