Horrifying

The more I learn about Giuliani the more frightened I become. I can't believe I'm saying this, as a Massachusetts resident: I'd rather see Mitt in the office than this wacko.

Amherst...

What makes it even more obnoxious is that they clearly think they are being clever.

Funny....

I've always linked religion with constraint, not freedom.

How deep is the hole they're digging?

It looks pretty big from here. Unfreakinbelievable. I don't have my hopes up, though, despite the reporter's excellent line of questioning. Every time this administration screws up I say, "This is it- this is what will enrage the American public and the Bushies will be stopped" and every time I'm sadly disappointed. I just don't trust the MSM to do anything about the constant lies being spewed from the White House.

Wow

Just, wow. Delusional is the only word that describes it.

The Nine

To be fair, the Democratic-led House was able to pass an extremely important bipartisan resolution yesterday -- by a vote of 372-9 --

Perhaps there are only 9 Dems with a spine left

Gary Ackerman

Yvette Clarke

Diana DeGette

Alcee Hastings

Barbara Lee

Jim McDermott

Bobby Scott

Pete Stark

Lynn Woolsey

It's no wonder nothing ever gets done.

After the '04 election

I took a break from politics. It was too much. I was heartbroken and angry. How could the American public be so ignorant? Why don't they see this administration for what it is- a group of law-breaking right wing nuts intent on stomping all over the constitution and the rights it supposedly protects?

I was given some hope in '06- surely now the Democrats would put a stop to this insanity. I can't believe how wrong I was. How can people like Harry Reid and Jay Rockefeller stand there, with a straight face, and still claim to be a member of the Democratic party? I am furious with the likes of those two- I can't imagine how I'd feel if I was one of their constituents. Thank goodness I have Teddy Kennedy- I'm so proud that he's helping Dodd today. I'm rethinking who I support for the Democratic primary now. I was firmly in the HRC camp before- I really thought she was stronger than this. But, if she can't even take one day and stop campaigning to protect the rights of Americans then how can I trust her to do that while president? And Obama? Politics of Hope, my ass. He's no different that the rest. I hope they prove me wrong. I really do.

The constitutjion was more important to these people...

"We were warned before 9/11 that the firewall between the FBI and the CIA was a bad idea but oh no. . . the constitution was more important to these people. . . their liberty was more important"

Jesus Christ! What strange bizarro world do we live in? Sometimes I feel like it's all just a bad dream. Republicans only back the constitution when it suits them. Where are all those strict constructionists now?

Kennedy

Is on fire. No surprise, though. He's one of the best speakers in the Senate, IMO.

Monday, December 17, 2007 11:22 AM

Wow

He's pulling out all the stops... Blackwater... the airlines that fly prisoners to the secret CIA jails... "he's [Bush] willing to let Americans die to protect the phone companies" Fucking brilliant.

Do you think Cornyn

and the others like him really believe what they are saying? How is it that an entire political party, and a good portion of US citizens, can be so delusional?

Monday, December 17, 2007 12:06 PM

@CarolynC

I had the same thought. It seems too pat, too convenient.

Hatch

"There's no guilt here" If there's no guilt, then they don't need immunity, do they? It's time to use their own argument against them: "If you haven't done anything wrong then you don't have anything to worry about." It's amazing that they can't see their own hypocrisy.

Monday, December 17, 2007 12:55 PM

And now

Hatch is spreading the infamous Joe Klein lie: this will mean we need a warrant to listen to a foreign national on foreign soil.

I don't think I could vote for an anti-choice candidate

Ever. Republican, Democrat or Independent. Abortion was my gateway drug, so to speak- it was the first issue that lead me on the path to becoming the liberal I am today. Growing up in a staunchly conservative, Republican household it was hard to find my way. But the first issue that hit home for me, and that I was able to breakaway from my parents on, was abortion. And that lead to other issues. If my parents were so ignorant and wrong on this one, could they also be wrong about the other "commie-pinko leftist" issues? Soon after abortion came affirmative action, then the environment, then civil liberties, and all the rest. My parents ended up raising the commie-pinko-atheist leftist they despise so much. Fun times- can't wait to go home for the holidays this weekend.

So, for me, abortion is a deeply personal and important issue. One that I don't think is far afield from basic civil liberties. And I do think it is sometimes harder for men to understand the issue. Men will never understand the anguish of the decision to abort a pregnancy- it can be the most difficult and most important decision a woman can make in her life. So, I'm not surprised that there are Democrats (usually men- I can't think of any women right now) who are 'pro-life'- I'm usually more surprised and aghast that there are women, Republican or Democrat, that wear that 'pro-life' mantle.

At the same time, I would never consider myself a one-issue voter. Paul and Kucinich (who wore that 'pro-life' label until fairly recently) and other "fringe" candidates bring important issues to the table. I personally find Paul's abortion and marriage beliefs to be reprehensible, but that doesn't mean I can't objectively take a step back and say, "He's gotta a point there..." on other issues. That's what separates a liberal from a conservative- we can still think for ourselves.
