I'm an Obama supporter. I am still waiting for an apology for the Appalachia bashing. Where is it?
No apology for being bigoted against Appalachians, huh? So the NY Times shows some Jewish people saying the same things some Appalachians are quoted as saying. Guess you'll also make anti-semitic remarks too, then?
Why is it OK to go after what a minority of Appalachian people say, when a minority of people in other groups say the same thing and no one criticizes them?

Those dastardly hillbillies. Now they've infiltrated Florida and are pretending to be Jewish. Who knew they were smart enough to go to such lengths? Someone must stop them before they take over the whole country!
Just saw an article about a poll that shows Obama lags behind McCain among American whites by around 10 points. (Clinton lags by 4).
How can that be when everyone knows all the racists are in Kentucky and West Virginia and people elsewhere are all kind and noble?? Darn those evil hillbillies!! They must have infiltrated and taken over the whole country!
Go Obama. I think you will win and I hope it will be because you campaign in places like WV which are more likely to support you than other parts of the country once they see you here. And I hope then people will shut up about Appalachia.
Obama '08
Sorry, but I read about Clinton's comments early, before the firestorm really broke. And I guess I must be paranoid, but her words gave me cold chills. My immediate assumption was that she was waiting in hopes that something would happen to Obama. I'm with Olbermann on this one.
It is sad Obama feels forced to leave his church. This sounds like a great church that is preaching a true Chrisitian message, not the nationalist Americanist pablum that is found in most churches today. This is a prophetic church.
I hope since Obama is now forced to go elsewhere he will consider a good Episcopal church. We also preach the gospel.
Thank God for Sean Willentz, who refutes the prejudice against Appalachia. No one seems to understand that in many states, people inclined to racism vote Republican and vote in the Republican primary. In West Virginia, for example, many of those who might be labelled Republican are in fact registered Democrats.
West Virginia and Pennsylvania are no more racist than other states and are likely to go for Obama in November (assuming Obama doesn't write off the Appalachian region.) Other states that went for Obama in the primary are going to go Republican because Democrats there are a liberal minority. I hope someone in the Obama campaign is starting to figure this out.
Excuse me but I am a woman. I support Obama.
It would be lovely to have a woman president, but not Hillary Clinton -- attached to past failed policies and Bill Clinton in the background waiting to take over.
I am a 56 year old woman. I would love to see a female President of the US. But not Hillary Clinton. What does she stand for?
1. Bill Clinton who made it clear he will still "kind of" have his hands on the presidency.
2. Pro-Iraq War and other imperialist intervention
3. Botched health care reform
4. The destruction of government support for poor people (already accomplished)
5. No intervention to save the environment
I make these statements based on the Clinton record of 8 years already in the presidency.
Hillary was the worst thing that could happen for those of us who want women in leadership. I hope Obama brings some real female leadership into positions of power.
Hey Salon, did you pay the guy who wrote this?? I'd like to get a job writing fiction, because that's what this is. The guy clearly wasn't on the trip he's writing about. Obama was in Bristol, not Bristow. It's not close to DC, its like eight hours away. This writer sure took you guys for chumps.
Three of my women friends have divorced in the past two years, all their own choice. Their husbands were all nice guys. But none of the women wanted to stay married, and now they say they are happier than they have been in years. Then there was my mom who said no way would she ever marry again after my dad died. So why then should I want to get married? I don't want kids and I'm free.
Well, I'm 56, so that's not quite 60 but its close. Actually I get happier as I get older. Believe me, I'm not anti-men. I've dated some good ones and still have close men friends (including the ex of one of my formerly married woman friends). But its so nice to have the run of the house and do things when I want and not on someone else's time frame. If this was 1950 I might be unhappy single, as well as unable to pay the bills - but this is 2008 and being single doesn't bar one from anything, including sex. Freedom is sweet. And if I feel a need to nurture and mother and have unconditional love (really unconditional love which is not possible with either spouse or child) -- there's this wonderful thing called "a dog."
I am not a Clinton fan and I voted for Obama, but good for her and her courage, and good also that she emphasized women. I certainly hope we get a woman president, and soon. I did not want Hillary to be the first -- I want an independent woman and Hillary just has to deal with the Bill issue. Plus she is too conservative and voted for the war. But she has indeed, like Obama, taken us a long way toward full inclusion in this country.
What do you know about West Virginia? Nothing.
