Read the Amazon reviews for "Atlas Shrugged"

Too Busy, Too Cluttered

And as a person who checks Salon several times a day, I find it hard to tell what's new and what isn't.

The reason MySpace is failing and Facebook is gaining is largely a function of the latter's clean, elegant design. You're going in the other direction.

Just wanted to bring that up while I bring my mixed-breed dog to the bathhouse to pick up some aborted-fetus snacks - her favorite!

Arianna Huffington is an idiot

I wonder if she got her "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" advice from her spiritual guru, Deepak Chopra.

Once you understand

that capital-L Libertarianism is neither an economic theory nor a political worldview but a quasi-religious belief like Young-Earth Creationism, it makes much more sense.

Community colleges are great

I went to one for a course a couple of years back. The management sent around an announcement for all the instructors to read to their classes to let the budding geniuses know that spitting was bad.

I think that hsnclai above is right

And that the money is disappearing into the same black hole that Saul Zaentz made Creedence Clearwater Revival's royalties disappear into during the early '70s. Once a crook, always a crook.

This morning on NPR

They were interviewing people in a diner in the town in Virginia where President Obama will be speaking today. One of the patrons said he was against Obama's health care plan "because he said it would take care of minorities first, blacks and what-not. I heard it on the news."

When I was a boy

"Harriet The Spy" and "A Wrinkle In Time" were among my favorite books; it didn't matter that the protagonists were girls. I also liked "The Phantom Tollbooth" (protagonist a young boy) and "The Pushcart War" (protagonists mixed grown-ups). I've read the first three within the last five years or so and they stand up well.

Oh, bloody hell.

I was sick of sensitive singer-songwriters back in 1972. They're not any more interesting this time around.

Wasn't there a Florida legislator

who gave the excuse (after being caught blowing guys in a public toilet) "They were big and black and threatening and this was the only way I could think of to not have them beat me up"?

A Republican, of course.

It's nice that the FBI

is busy encouraging and then arresting feeble-minded "plotters" from Newburgh to Miami instead of actually investigating people who have made violent threats.

I would bet

that if you took the text of that ad and showed it to random college students, only about 5% would be able to connect that to an assassination threat.

It's not a big surprise that a classified ad clerk - usually the lowest of the low in the newspaper hierarchy - in an isolated county with only 43,000 people would let something like that slip by.

Not just sick ones, apparently

From today's front-page article in the Middletown, NY Times Herald Record:

Cadets' senior project designed to help fellow soldiers

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090423/NEWS/904230345/-1/NEWS

(article about West Point engineering students building a "bionic" foot for amputees)

Lt. Col Joseph Hitt, the professor advising the project, stops the test and sends the cadets back to the lab to make adjustments on the leg.

"Our eventual goal is to have a foot that our active duty soldiers can wear that is robust and durable," he says. It should handle sand, water, all kinds of terrain.

(boldface mine)

Perhaps the colonel misspoke, but what this would seem to indicate is that the Army seems to want to have people with leg amputations to return to active duty once a suitable prosthetic is developed.

@Planetary_Eulogy

understood and applied the germ theory of disease some 200 years before germ theory was postulated?

The Puritans may not have known the exact mechanism of transmission, but they did know that smallpox could be spread by contact with an infected person, as well as their personal effects.

That neither confirms nor denies the claims that Churchill or others have made regarding the intentional spreading of smallpox by Europeans to native populations.
