I'm sorry what was the article about. I confess I became a little lost when Paglia began to wax profound on the delightful sexiness of Edie Sedgwick? and French actresses. Again, sorry what is faux-feminism anyway? Any form of feminism that isn't on base with the author? Perhaps Hilary isn't screaming sexism because as a politically savvy woman she is acutely aware that, in America, sexism is the elephant in the middle of the room. It's there, but everyone pretends it isn't. On the other hand, everyone is stepping all over themselves to treat Obama with kid gloves, because noone wants to appear even remotely racist. Hillary is the only candidate with the figurative cajones to dish it right back.I worked the trenches of domestic violence for five years and it amazed me how many educated women refer to battered women as "those women," as if survivors of abuse were some subspecies of human being. They would blame them for being victimized, and then shut them down when they stood up for themselves. It is ironic that Camille Paglia is so fond of French women, who find extramarital dalliances as par for the course. Maybe Hillary personally doesn't give a damn if Bill cheats because her priorities are elsewhere. Camille Paglia is proof that sexism thrives because the worst detractors of women are often other women.
I agree with Milton. It is fashionable to claim support of Obama as progressive and forward thinking. And I will stand in defense of Geraldine Ferraro's comments-although I am quite sure I will be summarily dismissed as racist or non-relevant (that's okay I'm a Floridian so I am used to it). Politics is all about timing and Barack Obama running now has been a litmus test regarding racism and sexism in America. The timing couldn't have been better. God forbid we should focus on anything as trivial as issues or voting records or dare I say it-substance. Barack was only a contender at the outset because of his very vanilla persona. His tagline should have been "Obama-a black man that even skittish white folk can embrace!" I find it very telling that he has morphed into a black southern baptist preacher as the campaign has progressed and he stumps through the south. As time goes by, his rhetoric has begun to resonate more as MLK than JFK. America has told him- it's okay to be black, so he has become black. On the other hand Hillary is between a rock and a hard place or Hillary-how to be female without seeming feminist or feminine! Those who would support Hillary are characterized as "old, uneducated white women." Oh the humanity, I am old at 37 and ignorant to boot! I would be much more comfortable with Barack if he were really black- Jesse Jackson black (Sr. not Jr.) If he had fought the good fight and earned his stripes. At least it would be more honest and he would have the battle scars to prove it. Really, what adversity has he faced in his life? What trial by fire has he endured? He has been spoon fed his whole life and will crumble or waffle the minute it hits the fan or most likely cast the blame somewhere else as he is prone to do.
It is the courtesy that one gives to another regardless of his/her stance on an issue. It is when one treats another with regard. I could see how one such as yourself would not require something as trivial and tedious as respect; in order to gain respect, one must first show respect. In this regard, I am afraid you are severely lacking. True, you don't need my respect; your unwavering trust in your own opinion precludes you from any such need. So then why blog? If you are the final analysis, what is the purpose in providing your POV and exposing IT for criticism? Everyone should just fall in line, right?
Women who pursue careers in male dominated fields are extremely marginalized.Hillary Clinton-case in point. I couldn't agree more. As the mother of autistic son, and the sister of a man who is brilliant, and quite likely an aspie, I am intrigued by your viewpoint. My brother has been recently blessed with a wife who sets aside her needs to keep him on the straight and narrow. She manages this in such a way that she keeps him on the right path without being controlling. It is a very delicate balance, but he IS the brilliant one. Female aspies should be so lucky as to find a man willing to do the same. You state your case very well. Perhaps, women should just set their sights on nursing, education and social work as Michelle Obama suggested. Then everyone can go on believing that there is social equality as long as women know their place and stick to "caregiver" type roles. That is truly "change" we can believe in, no?
Really...because we agree to disagree with Obama supporters. Yeah I guess that is pretty irrational. On the other hand, the comments of many of Obama's supporters has been completely sane, well thought out and rational. May I point out the very sane comments of manos99 from Houston. Whose clever retort "For the Love of God...Piss Off," just shook me to the core-with an odd mixture of pity, revulsion and laughter. I haven't seen any anger or defensiveness at all. I know-it's "righteous indignation" when an Obama supporter spews nasty misogynistic rhetoric. When a Clinton supporter dares to disagree, we are angry and irrational. Hmmm...must be those pesky little hormones. I am not saying you personally are sexist/misogynistic but give us a little credit. We are not all frothing at the mouth.
