Dear Fired, I can put you in touch with a 30-year Human Resources Director who has just gone into private practice to help people with precisely this kind of problem. I haven't figured out how to write this without making it sound like a commercial, but I'm not going to give his contact data because of that concern. If you want to pursue it, I guess you could contact Cary, and he can get the good folks at Salon to give you my contact info. Or, there are probably other people out there that do something similar.
In my view, every congressperson should be required to read "Language in Thought and Action" by (ironically, the late Senator) S. I. Hayakawa. This is a seminal work which cogently explains the danger of equating "the thing" with "the symbol of the thing." The country is not the flag, but these folks don't seem to understand that fact. Interestingly, Hayakawa also discusses the notion of "if you're not with us, you're against us," which was first coined by Benito Mussolini.
It's interesting that the first comment was somebody who plans not to subscribe to Salon because of SZ. I became a premium subscriber precisely because of Charles Taylor's reviews (lately missing from these hallowed pages), and I think SZ carries the flag beautifully.
