Don't sweat the Greeks
[Read the article: My mother-in-law put a curse on us and spat in my husband's face]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]2500 years ago the Greeks invented democracy, theatre and philosophy. Shortly afterward they invented the midday nap, and they have been coasting ever since. Tell your mother-in-law to fuck off.
P.S. Did she insist on doing the bloody sheet thing after your wedding night? Tell her to join the rest of us in the 21st century.

@Josiah Rowe
[Read the article: Kristol plays the Marx card]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm left-handed, but I use my right for self-abuse. FWIW.
-
Bullshit
[Read the article: Kristol plays the Marx card]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Kristol makes too much of it, but you and Sullivan are willfully misreading Obama's words. Sullivan twists "religion" into "more rigid forms of religion." Obama's identification of religion as an analgesic to worldly troubles *is* Marxist. But that doesn't make Obama a communist.
-
Awesome on both counts!
[Read the article: Whiz-bang commercial: Awesome or awful?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Duh. C'mon, Sarah. You know you want to write your name in the snow once before you die.
-
You know who else shouldn't vote?
[Read the article: I think my dad's too old to vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Women.
Oh, and black people.
-
@curse10
[Read the article: I quit being a musician because I couldn't play without drinking]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I like a good STFU as much as the next guy, but Mother of Pearl! I'm sorry you can't play anymore, but you write as if you became a lawyer after being kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery. Hey, princess: if you don't like being a corporate lawyer (or working for your particular corporation), then quit! Personally, I think you missed your calling as a motivational speaker.
-
Waaah! THEY started it!
[Read the article: Is it "contradictory" to decry the right's tactics while insisting on their equal application?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Personal attacks are the exclusive province of the Right, and the Left is just playing catch-up? Are you high?
How about this: personal attacks are the provence of assholes, and assholes have no party affiliation. When Bill and Hillary trashed the reputations of his "bimbos," they weren't acting like Republicans -- THEY WERE ACTING LIKE THEMSELVES. When Al Franken acts like an asshole, it's because that's who HE is. The same goes for Rush, and Coulter, and so on.
Jesus, you're a self-righteous prick.

Interesting
[Read the article: The pope, the Jews and repentance]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]He remains a Catholic for the same reason he remains an American. I've never heard it expressed in those terms, and I find it difficult to fault. Which is *huge* for me.
-
Worst analysis ever.
[Read the article: Obama, get ready for the "Clinton rules"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Clinton gets hammered for every lie because she's a habitual liar. And unlikable, too. Duh. Continuing to call the Tuzla story "misremembering" vel sim. is, at best, remarkably naive.
Also, McCain's been getting a fair amount of flak for labelling all Muslims extremists as Al Qaeda. It's true that the press is comparatively ignoring him, but why is that surprising? He's not the story, and he will continue to fly under the radar until the Democrats pick a nominee.
This is not a right-wing/conservative media conspiracy, folks.
-
It's an all-volunteer military, Greenwald
[Read the article: Bill Kristol, great man of sacrifice, on the duties of Passover]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One has no more obligation to join simply because he supports a war than one has to become a sanitation worker if he wants his garbage picked up.
-
Cold equations. Nice.
[Read the article: New York Times editorial scolds Clinton ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That was some sci-fe story about a stowaway who has to be killed to conserve fuel, right? I think I read it in high school. See? I know some shit.
-
Sci-fe, of course...
[Read the article: New York Times editorial scolds Clinton ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]being sci-fi stories written in Santa Fe. Or some such.
-
Two things, Holden
[Read the article: Anti-Obama ad a winner for McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]1. Obama *is* rich. Not as rich as some, but richer than most.
2. The Horton issue in '88 was first brought up by AL GORE in his attempt to win the Democratic nomination. Sleazy politics have no party affiliation.
-
@Abagadro
[Read the article: Anti-Obama ad a winner for McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Interesting. Thanks.
-
Dump the commie bastard.
[Read the article: I like him but he's weird about money]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]To only slighty misquote a wise man: "Whoever told you that living in abject squalor is a character-builder was misinforming you."
-
More than a midlife crisis, I'd say
[Read the article: My husband of 12 years suddenly says he never loved me]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think a visit to a psychiatrist is in order. Fear of dying; work stress; trying to disassociate oneself from (essentially) his entire life -- sounds kind of major. Based on my own experience I'd say he needs mood stabilizers to get out of crisis, and regular therapy to talk out his issues. Good luck.
-
So it's "right-wingers" against "progressives"?
[Read the article: Taking back the debate over Israel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Way to frame the debate. How childish.
-
Don't you get it?
[Read the article: So long, Canada]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We HAVE to treat our northern and Southern borders equally. Otherwise it's RACIST. NPR said so.
-
RE: _Aeneid_'s ending
[Read the article: Ursula K. Le Guin celebrates early Rome]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Although it is widely believed that Vergil didn't get the chance to give his epic a final polish before he died, many scholars (a large majority, even) hold that the _Aeneid_ ends with Turnus' death on purpose.
-
WTF, Cary?
[Read the article: I want more commitment from my married girlfriend]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Your advice boils down to "Two-time your married girlfriend to strenghten your bargaining position"?
Joan, how about I answer some of Cary's letters for a couple of weeks on spec? He's just awful.
-
@SB
[Read the article: Hillary's "testicular fortitude"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Maybe you were being facetious, but it's hard to tell in this Age of Outrage. "Junk" is a unisex term. You got junk; I got junk; all God's children got junk.
-
Whitewash
[Read the article: Wright's theology not "new or radical"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Anoter apologist saying, "What Cone really meant was..."; "What Rev. Wright really meant was..."
Come on, folks. KKK of America is mere "rhetorical excess?"
The AIDS conspiracy theory is a "trope for Tuskegee"?
If you want to defend what someone says, they defend what he says. Don't rewrite it and tell everybody there's no problem here.
-
Fuck you, Cary.
[Read the article: I'm really a self-actualized being, but my family is all messed up]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You're not a writer. You are an advice columnist. Advice columnists write, but they are not writers.
If you are Jonesing so hard to be novelist, then for Christ's sake quit and write one. Surely Joan can find someone who understands what an advice columnist's job is, and who can moreover manage to answer more than one letter per column. Quit "challenging" yourself and your readers and do your damn job.

This young lady needs therapy
[Read the article: Our friend got drunk and went to a hotel room with a bunch of Marines]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sadly, I've known a few women like this. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that Jan was sexually abused. I don't understand why abuse leads to this kind of behavior, but I've seen it enough times to know that it does. She needs regular, intensive therapy to come to grips with what happened to her before she sleeps with the (really, really) wrong guy. She should knock it off with the drinking, too. Good luck to her.

Hillary for VP? I dunno...
[Read the article: Night lands Clinton closer to oblivion]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Maybe he'll make her Attorney General, like she wanted way back when. I find it hard to see them working together in any meaningful way.
