  • "Slow down?"

[Read the article: I left an abusive marriage, and now I'm in love with a thief]

Digest the information? LW and Cary, sometimes things really are black and white. LW, you need to drop the thief pronto. Someone who talks in a detached manner about grand theft is bad bad news. You seem determined to pick bad men. You need to go into therapy (finally Cary gets it right) and work that out.

  • Good advice for once!

[Read the article: I secretly hate myself]

Is Cary on vacation? That must be it...

  • @marmelade

Can you name some great movies with bad scripts? Besides "Citizen Kane"? I'm willing to accept your theory, but some examples would help me.

And FWIW, I thought Scorsese's "The Departed" was pretty damn good. I think the first 15 minutes before the title card are brilliant.

  • Serious question

[Read the article: States say "no" to abstinence-only]

I am ambivalent about sex ed, but is it the contention of the those in the pro column that without sex ed, today's teens and (gulp) tweens would have no clue about condoms, the pill, STD's, etc.? I know what the data suggest, but that makes no sense to me. We've got MTV, movies, the Internet, and kids can't learn about birth control and safe sex on their own? I don't get it.

  • Cheer up, Gary...

    [Read the article: Childhood's end]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You still have toking up with the daughter at some Steely Dan reunion concert to look forward to. Keep your chin up.

  • "Technically" married? That's hilarious.

[Read the article: My married boyfriend's ditching me for Christmas]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

How's that different from "actually" married? What's the hold up with your divorce? With his?

Mother of Pearl, where to begin? Does his family even like you? Or are they still holding out hope for the wife? Does she know about you? How do you know he isn't stringing both of you along?

I'm sure it'll all be fine. This situation's got "happily ever after" written all over it.

  • Tracy, the next time you come down...

[Read the article: Shaming Jamie Lynn Spears]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

on the right side of an issue will be the first time. 16-year-olds aren't emotionally equipped to make the decision to have sex, much less become parents. When did "shame" become a bad word? Or "morals" or "common sense"? Sex at that age isn't evil, but it shows a lack of character, foresight and morality. Didn't we recently learn that Britney first did it at 14? Mamma and Papa Spears did a bang up job. I hope Mamma's parenting book comes out before one of her kids turns to the crystal meth and shatters her credibility beyond repair.

Being judgmental isn't a bad thing. It's a good thing. It's how we learn about little things like right and wrong.

  • What bbrock said

[Read the article: "There Will Be Blood"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Spare me from reviewers who fault a movie for what it's *not* about. I once knew sombody who strongly disliked the HBO series "Band of Brothers" simply because it didn't address the issue of army segregation. By the reviewer's rationale, "The Vagina Monologues" is crap because there are no men in it. Or is that the only demographic we can ignore without even a twinge of hypocritical embarrassment?

Get off your soapboax and review the damn movie.

  • "co-presidency"

[Read the article: Hillary Clinton gets serious]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Let's divorce personalities and political parties from the equation. How in the *world* is a de-facto co-presidency constitutional? Do we want to start making this a regular practice? Before you Dems start pooh-poohing me, consider: eventually a huband-wife team from across the aisle will be up to the same shenanigans. Is anybody okay with that?

  • @fetboy

[Read the article: Hillary Clinton gets serious]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Well, that was a nice bit of fuzzy Dr. Phil psychobabble about marriage, but it doesn't answer the question. Let's take Hillary and Bill out of it: would you be comfortable with (e.g.) John McCain as President, with de facto co-president Cindy in charge of -- I don't know -- overhauling Social Security?

  • Trapped in a crappy relationship by property and a child...

[Read the article: Cops arrested my partner for felony heroin possession]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

And to the think: the gay/lesbian commmunity had to fight to tooth and nail to partake of the American dream. Enjoy!

Good luck with your problem. I don't envy you. My gut says walk away, but a few questions from a non-lawyer: was either of you the birth mother, or was the child adopted? If she's the mother, she's clearly unfit. But what's your legal standing with the child? Can you take custody? If you're the birth mother, that's one less headache to deal with, I guess.

  • Anyone who cites Dan Bern lyrics...

deserves to be editor's choice. Anyway, I appreciated it, samsson.

  • Jesus, Bethincary (and some others)

[Read the article: Hillary and the mean kids on the bus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

When the press react negatively to Hillary, why can't it just be about her? Why drag G.W. into it? She's a phony. She only cozied up to the press at the very end out of desperation. And they resent her for it.

Would you make the contrary argument that a lot of folks dislike the President because of the Senator from New York? That's ludicrous.

  • Apologies, Bethincary...

for misunderstanding your post. Always more fun to read once and type quickly, though, don't you find? *blush*

  • Perhaps implicit in Cary response, but...

[Read the article: My molester financed my college education]

your county health dept. should be able to hook you up with some free meds, if you're strapped for cash. And counseling is a must. Good luck to you. Depression's a motherfucker.

Lorazepam is good for anxiety. A (maybe) funny-because-it's true story: I remember seeing "The Departed" in the theatre. After Matt Damon's shrink prescribed him 20 Lorazepam, he asked if it was enough to commit suicide. After she answered, "Maybe it is," some chick in the audience loudly retorted, "Trust me, lady. It's NOT."

    Hang in there.

  • Isn't it just *possible* that...

[Read the article: The witch ain't dead, and Chris Matthews is a ding-dong]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

a lot of people in the press and elsewhere dislike Hillary as a person? If calling her a bitch is sexist, then how about "asshole"? Is it all right to dislike her because she's an asshole?

This wave of "Girl power! Yay!" journalism is embarrassing.

  • What keeps you...

[Read the article: I'm a suburban husband in my 40s and I think I'm getting depressed]

from engaging in pointless public self-defense?

Nothing, apparently. Cary, you may well be a good writer, but that's not your job. You are an advice columnist (and I in no way demean the profession when I say this). By definition, it's supposed to be about the letter writers, not you and your sensitive, artful prose. Get over yourself.
