  • Smart Roads Will Help

[Read the article: How to get better gas mileage]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Ever notice when a stop signal stops 20 cars in order to let one car cross an intersection?

Starting and stopping 20 cars wastes a lot of fuel.

A smart signal system can detect the traffic flow and wait for the larger group to pass before letting the single vehicle cross.

Smart freeway signals can alert drivers on freeways as to traffic conditions up ahead. This will help to prevent traffic "surging" where cars constantly accelerate and brake, wasting fuel and increasing brake wear.

  • The Perfect Storm

    [Read the article: Oligarchical decay]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

9/11 was the Perfect Storm for the GOP. It is hard to imagine a less fortuitous event playing into the hands of the Bushies.

Add a do-nothing Congress, an asleep-at-the-switch press, and gullible (and stupid) voters and you have our present political situation.

I doubt that the damage done by this Administration will ever be fixed. Our political landscape has been altered beyond repair. I suppose the best we can hope for is the emergence of a political party that will embrace all that's good from the Republicans and the Democrats and try to forge it into a cohesive message.

Absent that, we are in dire straits indeed.

  • And Another Thing ....

    [Read the article: Oligarchical decay]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This is quoted from another letter:

"And how can you, in a column on this subject, quote someone linking Bill Clinton and George W. Bush? Let's review: Bill Clinton was impeached; George W. Bush has not been and is not going to be."

This illustrates are far we have fallen. Clinton was impeached for lying about sex. Nobody died.

George Bush led us into an unecessary war and thousands have died, possibly millions displaced and/or wounded, and our leadership in the world greatly diminished.

So let's forget about Bill Clinton and let's worry about our future, thanks to George W. Bush.

  • Religious Lunacy Abounds

[Read the article: Mike Huckabee's leap of faith]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why does the GOP attract the religious loonies?

Why, as it has been reported, did Jerry Falwell have such a strong influence in the GOP? Is it because the GOP is a party of sheep, waiting to be told how to think?

    Scary.

  • Regarding Bush and WMD In Iraq

[Read the article: Best of Salon 2007]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I hope someone puts together a complete and unbiased chronicle of all of the events and reports leading to the Iraq War.

Additionally, an accurate report as to what was happening in Iraq that caused Bush to press so urgently for an invasion would be nice.

This would, in my opinion, paint the Bush legacy with the blood of many thousands killed and wounded, not to mention a bruised US Constitution and a waste of the taxpayers' money.

  • Bush May Have Seen A Silver Lining on 9/11.

[Read the article: 9/11 Commission: Our investigation was "obstructed"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Hey Brightstar, did you forget to take your meds today? Please spare us the 9/11 conspiracy theory bullshit. There were no explosives in the WTC's. There was no gov't involvement in 9/11 period. The CIA wasn't behind it, or what ever secret organization you paranoidly obsess about. Accept reality and start taking your meds again. It will spare the rest of us from reading your paranoidal lunatic rantings."

One could argue, however, that the attacks on 9/11 were made-to-order for Bush and his neochristianconservative agenda.

It was a perfect opportunity to steamroll over a cowed Congress fearing the backlash if they did not accept Bush's faulty intel leading to the Iraq War.

  • Give Bush Enough Rope ...

[Read the article: Most Dems no better than Bush on Pakistan]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Perhaps that is the Dems' strategy. Let this inept Administration continue to self-destruct on the shoals of foreign policy and thereby ensure the Dems' political victory in November.

  • A Look At The Future

[Read the article: Tigers don't belong in zoos]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Judging by the changes that are taking place in the world, we'll be living in a dirty, crowded place where humans have pushed the natural habitats of wild animals into extinction.

Modern medicine is continuously extending the lifespan of our species. More and more open space falls to development.

The net result will be the overpopulation and pollution of the planet by humans, and Earth will suffer and eventually be unable to support life as we know it.

There is no solution to this other than meaningful population control and we all know that will not happen.

So say goodbye to the tigers, the elephants, the lions, the rain forests, and eventually life in the oceans.

  • McCain and Other GOPers Missed The Point

[Read the article: Standing room only for McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"We are succeeding now in Iraq. As we blame the president for the failed strategy we should give him credit" for current success, McCain said in a 90-minute debate three days before New Hampshire holds the first primary of the 2008 presidential campaign.

Give the American voters the credit for current successes in Iraq.

We forced Bush to replace Rumsfeld when all of Congress went to the Dems after the last election. Only then did the Idiot Bush get the message that his war strategy was failing and his support of Rumsfeld was doomed.

The results of the last election are what made bush get rid of Rumsfeld. Let's not forget that.

  • Will He Eliminate The Income Tax?

[Read the article: Listening to Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Good thing Obama doesn't propose replacing the income tax with a consumption tax.

Apparently Huckabee is the only candidate stupid enough to want to replace the IRS and income tax with a sales tax.

The only people in favor of this are people living in mud huts in Alabama and born-again lunatics looking for the Second Coming.

The rest of us, especially retirees, will be paying a huge tax on everything we buy. Corporations are excluded of course since the Husckster doesn't want to anger the money folks.

  • Only Idiots Will Vote For This Guy

[Read the article: Mike Huckabee wants to abolish the IRS]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

No one will ever be able to abolish the American tax industry. Imagine the number of people employed by the entire tax, accounting, servicing, legal, and information distribution systems related to the State and Federal Income Tax entities and you have a substantial percentage of the voters.

Are these people and their families gonna vote themselves out of a job?

In many instances entire corporate structures are created around the Federal Tax Codes.

And most importantly, this is yet another Republican proposing a tax system that benefits the wealthy, at the expense of the middle income taxpayers.

And what about retirees? An extra 30% tax on everything they buy will result in their economic destruction.

If anybody doubts the level of insanity running throughout the Republican Party all they need to do is look at Huckabee.
