McCain's 100 years statement is unfortunate, coming from a prospective US president.
When we try to "promote" democracy in the world, 100 years of American military presence in a new democratic country is somewhat problematic.
We are in Korea as a protection against an invasion from an openly hostile North Korea.
No such condition exists in Iraq.
We are the aggressors there. Please don't let McCain forget that.
If you were driving a car at 120 mph and warning signs said "curves ahead" you would slow down, right?
Well, in our rush to invade Iraq there were plenty of warning signs telling us that our intelligence reports were not altogether accurate.
But we kept the pedal to the metal, attacked, and you know the rest of the story.
The families of God-knows-how-many dead and wounded Americans and Iraqis must be asking why their loved ones were sacrificed in an unecessary war.
To compare Iraq to the war in Europe against the Axis and the war against Japan is a false comparison.
Iraq has never been a direct threat to us. Unless, of course, it threatened to nationalize its oil industry.
"Jesse Helms was a kind, decent, and humble man and a passionate defender of what he called "the Miracle of America." So it is fitting that this great patriot left us on the Fourth of July. He was once asked if he had any ambitions beyond the United States Senate. He replied: 'The only thing I am running for is the Kingdom of Heaven.' Today, Jesse Helms has finished the race, and we pray he finds comfort in the arms of the loving God he strove to serve throughout his life."
— President Bush.
Helms may have been trying to "serve" his god as atonement for his service in the Senate.
Espousing hate and prejudice is never called for, regardless of the vote.
Helms may have believed in god, but not the Christian god.
Haven't the Democrats learned ANYTHING from past campaigns?
Voters are DROOLING for decisiveness and intelligent conviction. Obama is blowing it, almost on a monthly basis.
We can drive long distances and spend far less fuel than we do now. Why that is not perceived as a reality by some folks is beyond me.
Hybrid cars and SUVs can be luxurious, powerful, and attractive and can get 25 (or more) mpg at 65 mph.
Almost without fail, when domestic carmakers complain that higher mileage requirements "cannot be met" Honda produces a new model that meets and often surpasses the new requirements.
The large American SUVs are built using technology from the 1940s. Heavy steel bodies sitting on heavy steel truck frames powered by huge, cast iron V8 engines, with huge truck-style front ends (the macho image, you know), fat tires and never used rooftop cargo racks is obsolete technology but Detroit keeps building them anyway.
A two and a half ton SUV is not needed to transport a large family. It is possible to build a vehicle large enough that weighs less, has as much interior room, and is powerful enough to meet all highway conditions.
Glenn, you are badly needed in the "mainstream" of reporting as an agent of change.
Your factual presentations supporting your position on an issue is exactly what is missing in today's "sound-bite" journalism.
Power to you.
From the beginning of the Iraq war, I have been in numerous discussions with folks, both for and against the war, and I have seen opinions shifting towards leaving Iraq as soon as possible.
A few folks are resigned to an indefinite occupation but most want us to get out, and the sooner the better. And, this is best accomplished by establishing a timetable for withdrawal (in secret if necessary) that the Iraqis will accept.
And then we should get out. This is the general consensus of the people I am talking to.
The attack on America on 9/11 accomplished the following:
It got us into an unecessary war in Iraq. It has us bogged down in Afghanistan where the poppy business is booming. It has scared our spineless politicians into cooperating with a lawless Administration.
When will this madness stop? In January?
I doubt it.
and we won't leave without it.
All else be damned.
The ACLU will challenge this under the Fourth Amendment. Let's watch for another 5 to 4 vote as our freedoms are flushed down the toilet by this disgusting Congress and president.
Here's a prediction: Gas prices will fall dramatically as we get closer to the Election.
This is how the GOP works. They manipulate fear to their advantage and they know that most voters have very short memory spans.
So, the sky-high gas prices of a few months back will be mostly forgotten and folks will not be thinking about oil price manipulation when they are in a voting booth.
And the mainstream media will play right along with the deception. You will not see front-page articles documenting the convenient drop in gas cost as the Election nears.
Obama is a politician.
'Nuff said?
