in the good old days . . .

I'll jump in here and say I agree with MWise that the boys can't sit still so school structure favours boys is very weak given that this was EXACTLY how school was structured in the good old days when boys dominated education and were seen as the more intelligent gender.

So what happened? Why did boys retreat from the educational sphere?

It wasn't that girls were the favoured gender - girls in education have had to fight to overcome stereotypes in many fields.

My guess is that it is two things:

As more girls stay in school and actually do well - education gets perceived as more and more as a female things and for some reason boys and men retreat from things seen as female (look at some of the fields/employment that were traditionally male and are now precominately female)

The second reason seems to be a devaluing of education in general (maybe because of the gender thing?) and it seems a "weak" thing to excell at. Education seems also to have a class thing associated with it - read between the lines of "conservative" politicians. Real Americans don't have that hoity toity book learnin' and tough guys DO things like sports and act tough.

Hard to do sitting still and following orders when you are trying to act tough. Just as hard as when you are putting all your effort into finding a husband asap because real women are married with a baby at 21, not sitting in a class somewhere.

It is great that girls/women got the message that real women can get an eduacation, now boys/men need to re-evaluate what it means to be a real man - and that might include getting good grades because they studied for the test.

Fosse's Mexican Breakfast

Okay - Kanye's outburst was not a breath of truthful fresh air - just an outburst by some egocentric musical artist who decided that his opinion trumps some young artist's acceptance speech leaving her stunned and speechless and humiliated.

Jerk.

I have no idea which was the better video. Like both songs - one is catchy, one cute. Neither will be listened to in 5 years.

As far as the Best Video though - I find it interesting that Beyonce borrowed heavily from Fosse's Mexican Breakfast without any recognition given to him? But MTV is all about the moment - not what gets ripped from what.

Kanye has some talent but not near enough to justify his ego. What a jerk.

Exactly what I was saying.

@Elron

"I do think there's very little difference between a "traditional date" and paid sex, except that with a traditional date I pay money (for the date) without being guaranteed a result (such as sex)."

@Big Cheese

"We just want to have some fun with naked women, without spending a small fortune."

Like I wrote earlier - your words speak louder of how you relate to women than how women relate to men

If the only reason you want to go out and spend time with a woman is to get laid, and you are willing to pay for a dinner and entertainment and be nice long enough to get her yes, then why not just hire a prostitute? Then no one has to waste any time pretending they are interested.

And Doppelganger who wrote that women should "happily go down on their husbands/boyfriends every morning? Just because they liked it? Without a quid pro quo?"

You really think Ashley did that? Without quid pro quo?

If you think that women don't do this with the men they want to be with, for the pure enjoyment of fun loving sex, then I suggest you make some changes in yourselves and hang around a different type of woman. Not all women are for sale for a pair of shoes or dinners at Friday's.

perceptions

I think a whole lot of the posters here who claim that all forms of sexual relationships have at the basis, exchange of assets, are saying FAR more about how they regard their relationships with women, than how women regard their sexual relationships.

Dick and Fay agree on the depiction of men?

So Dick,

Do you agree with Weldon's depiction of men and male behaviour and what it takes for a woman to have a (relatively) conflict free relationship with one of your folk?

Do you agree that women should pretend to be dumber than the man? This is not to say that the woman should lord her intelligence over a man, but that she should actively act dumber to protect the ego of a man?

What is that saying? An A-class leader will surround themself with A-class people. A B-class leader will surround themself with C=class people.

What does Weldon's opinion of men and women and who needs to be publicly smarter say about men?

Dick - if you read what posters are writing - they are disagreeing that men are substandard dumb ego fragile lazy grunting narcissists that Weldon seems to describe.

Or was your comment some subtle way of agreeing with Weldon's view of Man?
