And Marilyn Monroe offed herself when her value as a sex symbol was on the way to fading. She was a beautiful woman when she died but in the end, I believe she was as locked into her image as most of the people who used her.
Boogie Nights. Good movie.
Marilyn Chambers wanted to go legit but was never seen as serious once she put a price tag on her orafices. To the end, the only real way she could work was porn or porn lite.
And yeah - she died alone - in a trailer.
56 is not that old you know.
As long as men are willing to buy it, there will be women willing to sell it.
So who reduces it to a mere commodity? The people who think it is something that can be bought? Or the people who decide since there are buyers, why not capitolize on it?
I loved (and still do) music videos. The interesting ones - the mini movies to music.
But as someone(s) pointed out earlier: MTV and its reliance on sexed up images to compensate the weak music, marketing ploys over talent reducing much pop music to, well, what the news networks reduced news to once they had to be money makers.
Talent and physical beauty, while lovely when combined, is even more rare than beauty or talent alone.
Back during the last days of MTV's emphasis on music videos there was a dance pop song Everybody Dance Now that featured the title hook sung with a strong female voice. The image though was a skinny pretty model who lip-synced.
They were loudly criticised and I was glad to see the actual singer appear - as the singer and herself in another video. I thought she was funky and pretty - but she was "fat" so not MTV friendly. How sad, eh?
Susan Boyle was just wonderful.
Nina Simone would never have a career today.
And people are still paying to see (SEE) Jessica Simpson.
@The Jim
My point is that there is a great deal of emphasis on the appearance - especially for women - in music. Especially in pop.
For the record - people keep saying Susan Boyle is "ugly". Really? She's no Britney but she is as attractive as most people are. Doesn't make her "ugly" - makes her just average - with a stunningly beautiful voice.
After reading this piece, that was my main question. Kind of a disgusting old fart in my opinion. He waxes poetic about his lovely departed wife, who he cheated on non stop, and then later slams marriage as an institution - curious as his marriage didn't seem to limit what he wanted to do earlier in life.
@andygrace
You said, "I wonder how he has lasted without any negative effects for all of his 76 years."
People who are emotionally shallow seem to be the ones least affected negatively by what life, and other humans, subject them to. Aubrey Reuben is about as emotionally shallow a person as I can imagine. I just hope the women are well compensated as he would be the worst type of person to actually have feelings for. Though I can't imagine how he projects himself honestly and still generate interest from women - especially those "with a brain"!
@GibsonGirl
Until then, the cliche 'if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen' comes to mind.
He published his head count and cheating on his wife in a public forum, known to have comments posted . . . why are you so worried that his feeling might be hurt? Aubrey should stay out of the kitchen, especially if he wants to publish his words of wisdom on "love".
I wouldn't worry about him feeling hurt by the negative comments, based on his "memoir" his feelings don't run deep.
And as a woman who hopes to die very old and with grace and dignity - I find his writing on his wife particular, and women in general offensive.
Why shouldn't I judge him - he sounds like a creep if I just use his own words. Should I give him a break just because he is a smelly old lech?
Sheesh! I'll save my compassion for someone aging with grace, dignity and humour.
I wouldn't vote for him because I can't get past what he did to his wife and his daughters (and believe me - this will affect them in the future when they have relationships with men). I can't get past that he sought out a woman young enough to be his daughter because one of his "kinks" was sticking it up her arse.
He is just another aging man feeling entitled to tits and holes and feels paying for it removes him from having to deal with the human.
On the one hand I don't think sexual behaviour is relavent to political carreers - on the other, they need to stop using their wives and children as political props to help them look legitimate and all American.
Want to fuck around? Fine. Get divorced and have at it. I would be more likely to vote for someone I think is not hiding behind a skirt. (Same goes for women but we just don't see so many of them dicking around on their hubbies)
