Reminds me

This story reminds me of the Mennonite school that was near where I lived. Not the Nike part - but the girls playing in their "modest" clothing.

I would often see the Mennonite teens out playing volly ball together. The boys in their black trousers, long sleeved white shirts, and ties. The girls in their long sleeves and long dresses and high socks. And the temperatures in the 90's.

I was glad to see them out playing dispite the restrictions of their dress. Too bad their religion fetishsized "modesty".

The fundies usually are harsher on the female, but it spills over to males as well - my guess those Somali girls' brothers are not in shorts and tshirts either.

Who?

White women supoorted Bush?

Perhaps the clarification is that Christianist women supported Bush, most of whom are white.

The Simpsons

So - the difference between Bart or his sister Lisa getting into college is that the school system favours girls, eh?

When it is cool to be hard working and smart - boys will get serious about school.

What a shame - girls and women had to fight long and hard against the societal norm of undereducating females, to have the opportunity to further their education. Boys and men have not had to fight that bias - instead, it seems they are throwing away their access to education because it just is not cool to attend class or have to work at homework in order to pass.

Want boys back in school? Find out how to fight the "uncoolness' factor. Don't penalize the girls for working hard. A lot of things changed for the girls when being smart was no longer a strike against their femininity. When it became sort of cool to be smart and not hiding it - more girls embraced doing well in school.

Splitsville

Personally, I think the GOP needs to split in to at least 2 parties: the Old Republicans, and the American Theocrats.

The NeoCons can pick which ever party furthers their goal of world domination.

Bush has 2 degrees

Okay - Bush has a bachelor in History from Yale and an MBA from Harvard.

Those are the creds, right?

I only have a BS degree - so I would be "marrying up" if degrees are the criteria?

I will tell you this - I can't imagine having a interesting conversation with Bush, political differences aside. I think he would be a terribly dull and crude companion. I work with a lot of people with degrees - some are interesting and some not.

I can't imagine marrying someone I don't find interesting to be with - and a degree doesn't make a dull intellect interesting.

On the other hand - I have had and do have wonderful relationships with people from all educational levels and have not noticed that a degree has anything to do with the development of intellect, wit or social skills.

And wasn't he a "special" friend and business associate of Pat Robertson?

Status of women

While the status of women may increase slightly when there are less of them in a society, the status of girls never does.

Women may or may not be able to negotiate, but girls will just be traded off or kidnapped (what is happening in rural China due to the shortage). And quite frankly - when society devalues females to this extent - adults of the female persuasion rarely have the power or right to do any "negotiating"

The only plus side is that with fewer women, the rate of increase in population slows down.

Camus Who?

I thought the book list article silly too. And dismissive of both sexes somehow. It also seems classist as well. Who are these men and women they got for their study? I doubt they asked men and women coming out of Walmart - or walking down Wall Street.

Just an aside - I've read nearly every book on the list. I'm a female who works with a lot of males. I doubt any of them ever heard of Camus. Once again - who were the people used in the study?

Marriage

Getting married adds the pounds too - for exactly the same reasons.

Guess if you want to scare women into behaving "properly", telling them they can get fat being married too would not work.

I love numbers

Doesn't everyone?

Yes - all women who have a child should stay home and cook, clean and tend to the kinder. And the numbers prove that it is actually cheaper!

"This means if my husband earns $59,400, we pay 10 percent on the first $14,600 and then 15 percent on the rest. But on the first dollar I earn on top of that, the tax rate jumps to 25 percent."

Of course the other way to use those numbers is that the couple pays 10% on the first $14,600 of the woman's income, and then 15% on the rest of her income, up to $59,400. Her husband will then be taxed 25% on any of his income that is makes the couple's income go over the $59,400 limit.

I suppose the next thing the writer will tell us that when she pays for the child care (which of course always comes out of the paycheque earned by the person with the womb), there is less money than if she stayed home and Betty Crokered herself.

Sheesh! I am so sick of this crap.

The Limbaugh Interviews

So - how many people does Limbaugh have on his show for interviews?

As far as I know, only Cheney and now Rumsfield.

Pretty telling, I think.

Cost of War

Real Conservatives would impose a War Tax to pay for this adventure. I mean, if it is a valid war then the country should sacrifice something now, instead of waiting until later when perpetrators will be pretty much gone, right?

What was that saying? History? Who knows. We'll all be dead then.

Not all of us will be dead when the piper demands his due. And a lot of our children will be alive then too.

What does "conservative" mean anymore?
