For real?
[Read the article: Camille's back!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Can I also point out everything patently absurd? Tell me when to stop!
Let's take a look at:
http://dir.salon.com/story/opinion/feature/2003/02/07/paglia/index_np.html
"If there truly were an authentic international coalition that had been carefully built, and if the administration had demonstrated sensitivity to the fragility of international relations, I'd be 100 percent in favor of an allied military expedition to go into Iraq and find and dispose of all weapons of mass destruction."
All zero of them.
"As we speak, I have a terrible sense of foreboding, because last weekend a stunning omen occurred in this country. Anyone who thinks symbolically had to be shocked by the explosion of the Columbia shuttle, disintegrating in the air and strewing its parts and human remains over Texas -- the president's home state! So many times in antiquity, the emperors of Persia or other proud empires went to the oracles to ask for advice about going to war. Roman generals summoned soothsayers to read the entrails before a battle. If there was ever a sign for a president and his administration to rethink what they're doing, this was it."
LO fucking L. Camille is an atheist but thinks we should re-examine our policies based on some sort of message from beyond our world. And of course, ANYONE WHO THINKS SYMBOLICALLY had to be shocked!! Anyone!! Solid logic if I've ever heard it. You cannot think in symbols without connecting the dots and realizing that exploded shuttle implies the need to re-evaluate war plans!
This is typical Camille BS. Crazy garbage mixed with edumacational historical references.
Let us read again:
"If there was ever a sign for a president and his administration to rethink what they're doing, this was it."
Yes, of ALL things, THIS was it. Not the fact that the Office of Special Plans was created to manufacture false intelligence to justify the war. Not the fact that there was no evidence of connection between Iraq and Al-Queda. Nope. Not the fact that the rest of the world didn't buy our story at all. Sure, those might be minor signs of a flawed policy but nothing compared to A RANDOM UNRELATED DISASTER. "A stunning omen." Folks you cannot make this stuff up!
"So I think that history will look back on this as a key moment. Kings throughout history have been shaken by signals like this from beyond: Think twice about what you're doing"
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that when history evaluates the Iraq war the shuttle "omen" isn't going to be seen as a key moment - or even REMOTELY FUCKING RELEVANT. I've never heard another single human being make the connection.
"I think that Bush administration officials are genuinely convinced of the rightness of their positions, although their biblical piety is cloying."
So they need to rely less on religion and more on - entrails reading? Check.
"People are much too complacent in the West -- though their comfort level has been shaken (as I predicted long ago in Salon) by the stock market drop."
Yes...how about that stock market drop? I wish I could find her prediction, I wonder what it was? That the stock market sometimes drops? (And then goes back up to the highest level it has been at)
"I've been a longtime admirer of Condoleezza Rice, because I like her articulateness and style -- her toughness and rigor. However, she might be a great national security advisor, but I'm not sure she has the touch and finesse that are needed for international relations. I like how she huddles with Bush to watch football and hash out strategy. She's got a military mind. I love her steeliness, but there's something a little harsh in her view of the world. She lacks the human touch. There's something a little off-putting about someone who has no evident romantic relationships, who sees life as basically a chessboard."
Yes, her articulateness and style and toughness and football watching are all wonderful. Let's talk about her competence shall we? Nope...we shall not!
So she dresses well but on the flip side she doesn't have a boyfriend - profound analysis. I like the throwaway "she might be a great national security advisor." She might, she might not - let's not address that! Because you know, that isn't HER FUCKING JOB. Does Camille even think she is a great security advisor? Or care?
This is what I mean by not holding different people to the same standards. Condoleezza Rice comes up and the best we can do is discuss how cool it is that she liked to watch football?
If you are going to offer only pure fluff, offer pure fluff on everyone. Her treatment of Condoleeza rice is *always* like this! Condoleeza Rice - that woman has great shoes!
