Counting chickens before the eggs are hatched is always dangerous but I expect that even if the Democrats come-up short of 60, the votes will be there to break filibusters on important issues. There at least three Republicans who will not block votes on good judges (I hope): Spector (PA), Collins (ME) (if re-elecetd) and Snowe (ME). Both PA and ME are Obama territory.
That means the magic number may be as low as seven.
Lieberman is a tough problem. It would be nice to see Joe go, but if Obama wins, Lieberman has to either eat crow and accept some discipline or worst case scenario: retire. That would temporarily deliver a seat to the Republicans because Connecticut's governor is a Republican. However, Joe has demonstrated he's a survivor and barring a McCain victory, he has no place else to go. He may be a proud man, but that pride is not going to lead him into retirement from public life. And after the election, being the "shabat goy"* of a increasingly reactionary Republican minority wouldn't be much fun.
Also, beneath the radar, Lieberman contributed $100,000 dollars to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. I don't think they sent it back.
*"Shabat goy" is a Yiddish term for a gentile who performed menial tasks for observant Jews on the Sabbath.
