The "atheist" position is that the probability of this being real is so vanishingly low that I can conduct my affairs as if the "elf" doesn't exist. The skeptic, however, will take a peek each morning - just to make sure no smoke is wafting out of the fireplace!

Hardly. Religion is mostly used to get the warriors in there, happily fighting and killing and dying. Usually on both sides.

It works, too, which is probably why the Soviets were so lame in Afghanistan: atheists simply lack the proper religious zeal to be effective killers.
