Right-wing punditry has it made

These guys are about to enter their golden age and they don't even know it. Think about this: what's easier, to doggedly support idiotic policies of a neocon President that fail miserably (and obviously) and look like a moron, or wildly criticize anything a Democratic President does and look like a Thoughtful, Serious Analyst? Any time President Clinton or President Obama as much as blinks wrong, these guys can have a field day with no accountability. They can make millions just blathering about it on TV. It's a goldmine.

So many of them are setting up the themes for this future bonanza. The war, people! We're at war! We need a great Leader as a Commander in Chief, Lord of the Bunker, Master of the Undisclosed Location! We are rubber, Democrats are glue! (Have I mentioned we're at war?) Thus, any diplomatic solution, any withdrawal, anything at ALL that could even remotely be spun as a defeat, will be spun so, and since this will be done by a President, it can be billed as "speaking truth to power", too. Instead of obsequious sycophants, these guys will be courageous critics. Much nicer. Very American. Freedom of Press, y'all.

And I suppose when the conservatives get over their guilt about Bush and learn to hate Obama (or continue to hate Clinton), the blowhards will get a reinvigorated audience, too. Watch for a rebound of Fox news in the next twelve months. The fun never ends.

Antiparallel stories

Maybe it's just me, but something here is striking: in Bill Clinton's case, you have a big huge and mostly pointless corruption investigation which finally leads to a sex scandal, while in McCain's case you've a juicy and mostly irrelevant sex scandal that just might be leading to a big huge corruption investigation.

It's like the Republicans are getting a wee taste of their own medicine... except based on something that actually matters. Ooh, the thrill!

Original article: Renzi won't resign

Republicans march in lockstep

...unless they are told by their colleagues to resign or stop campaigning for office. Remember Katherine Harris and her hilarious campaign for Senate in Florida?

Or perhaps he just got a good lawyer? They always react by making like they're going to retire at once, then they consult with a lawyer and suddenly there's fight left in them. Figures.

Original article: Bush chides Clinton, Obama

Landslide?

Wow. This is the guy who... wait, has he EVER won ANYTHING by anything resembling a landslide? Maybe that's why it's so (har dee har har) funny.

Almost as funny as him searching under his desk for Saddam's WMDs. Oh yeah. So damn funny.

(Just to think: we were THIS close to not having him as President. Oh, the pain!)

The real Freudian slip...

... would've been if he had said something like: "I have a conservative, liberal Mother, uh, I mean wife! Er... I was going to say, lobbyist! Uh.."

That would've been AWESOME.

Hell yeah

All right, I am a naturalized immigrant. I can do whatever the heck I want in this country, even vote! but I cannot run for President. Not that I would want to, but come on. This country has been built on immigrants. Heck, even our Lady Liberty is an immigrant. You know, even the so-called "native Americans" were immigrants from Siberia, if you're pedantic enough about such things.

The whole "natural born citizen" thing most likely has to do with the early struggles against foreign powers (namely, England) and the colonists' desire to stop being British and start being Americans. It is only, er, natural for them to desire one of their own serving as their President, considering that they've been under the foreign yoke for so long. But... we've been a nation for over two centuries now, time to diversify. I like the idea of a naturalized citizen being able to try out for the Presidency.

Of course, let's first elect a President who isn't a white male Protestant of some sort, and then we'll talk.

(By the way, just want to throw it out there: how many U.S. Presidents had non-Anglo Saxon last names? I can think of two only: Eisenhower and Van Buren. That's it.)

Yes, how dare they!

How DARE anyone suggest that there may be crooks and liars in the U.S. House of Representatives?! Those who even venture to think so (let alone speak it outloud) are traitors to this nation who are in league with the Terrorists. They should all be sent to jail without trial.

I bet you money Nancy Pelosi did this just to get some Republicans to fulminate on record about it. Again, notice how any motion having anything to do with preserving or restoring honesty, integrity and transparency in the U.S. government is greeted with near unanimous opposition from the GOP. Even if it's the flimsiest of the nonbinding resolutions, the GOP closes ranks and fights it. It's almost as if (dare I suggest it?) these folks had something to hide... no no, that's not possible. How can I even think so? They're just SO honorable, all of them. The most honorable bunch of people that's ever walked the earth.

Yes. "Honorable". That's the word.
