Eeek! Don't do it!
[Read the article: My wife thinks I'm cheating on her -- but I'm not!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Don't tell the wife anything about past indiscretions, even relatively harmless ones. You are only going to reinforce her delusions.
And yes, it sounds like your wife is suffering from mental illness. Psychiatrists aren't perfect. PTSD can be quite serious in and of itself and very possibly there was an underlying pathology that was missed.
Whatever the case, she needs serious help and you should not tolerate abuse.
Consult with a psychotherapist yourself for help in dealing with this.

Another way the country is going to hell in a handbasket
[Read the article: Blackwater's run for the border]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Democracy IS fragile.
Our general lack of understanding the lessons of history combined with irrational fears about border security plus the violence caused by ridiculous Drug War are going to lead to bringing in Blackwater and its cohorts. This is going to send us careening down a very slippery slope.
There are many areas of the border that already look like the military encampments that we used to mock in 3rd World countries.
The border patrol agents come from all over and are not integrated into their new communities; there is already distrust and fear in those areas.
How can we stop this madness?

Thanks for reporting on the emperor's wardrobe
[Read the article: Chris Dodd's leadership vs. Clinton and Obama's game playing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm so glad that you have revealed that the once and future emperors have no clothes.
I'm sick of leading Democratic candidates being held out as the Great Hope for defending our Constitution. There is no evidence that they will do so and great evidence to show that they will not. There is very little, if any, difference between the leading candidates of either major party.
That's why it is important to make your views known to the government and it is our duty to reign in government power.

Good advice but ...
[Read the article: An elderly salesman terrorized me in front of my kids!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As unfortunate as the LW's passivity was, I understand it. Women have a tendency to want to play nice, to not know how to properly assess a dangerous situation and act accordingly.
Although I would hope that I would not spend 2 hours with a nut like this, I've been sucked into situations that were uncomfortable and didn't take the necessary steps to get out.
I will say that I would not have tolerated this behavior in front of my kids. To me, that's the most puzzling part of this letter. My mother bear impulses really kick in if my kids are involved and I will do aggressive things I wouldn't do otherwise.
But Cary is right -- LW needs training to get over this before she gets in real trouble.

Why shouldn't food be cheap?
[Read the article: Go ask Alice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's lovely that we have so many choices. It's a wonderful thing. Cheap food has its place and has saved many people from going hungry. Cheap food spares us labor that we can use for other things.
Cheap food has paved the way for people like Ms. Waters to serve expensive food.
Cheap food isn't perfect food, but, due to consumer demand, cheap food is getting better. Regional food provides a wonderful diversity and, if you look at fast food menus and in large supermarkets, you will see that regional foods are being incorporated into our diets. Why shouldn't I enjoy Mexican food, Italian food, Indian food, Japanese food even though I don't live in those places? Why shouldn't I have grits or Cleveland chili or Boston clam chowder?
And, if you look carefully, you will that regional foods are stronger than ever.
The more choices we have, the better.

Welcome to the police state
[Read the article: Band on the run in New Orleans]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]How fondly I recall singing Amazing Grace with a one-legged street singer in the Quarter pre-Katrina!
How I wish that jazz funerals were a way of a life in every city, but they so uniquely define New Orleans.
How come rich newcomers to a city are always uptight?
But this is about more than people with rods up the ass. This is a sign of misplaced use of force. As we have seen with "don't tase me, bro," responses to marches, drug raids and zoning violations, the police are ready and willing to crack down en masse on these "crimes," leaving violent criminals to run free.
This is the classic sign of a police state. In NOLA, we are just watching the previews.

Hitler in our own backyard!
[Read the article: Hitlers, Hitlers and more Hitlers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If only these warmongers would study history instead of spouting propaganda from Bugs Bunny cartoons, they might see some ominous parallels indeed--but not from Iran.
Apparently Iran doesn't need a bomb to give it power--our "leaders" are scared pantyless already.

Relax, why dontcha?
[Read the article: If Britney Spears shouldn't be naked in front of her kids, what about me?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We're all too damn tense as parents. From my own experience with scrutinizing and being scrutinized as a parent, almost anything you do looks shaky when viewed through a microscope by someone with a little power.
Both my male children reached a natural point where they didn't want to be seen naked and turned their backs if they walked in on me changing clothes. I got little less free about revealing myself, too. It worked out fine.
There's a difference between seductive behavior and natural nudity around the home. I saw my mother naked on occasion my whole life and didn't think anything of it. I often saw my father in his boxer shorts but never fully nude and it seemed to give male nakedness too much importance. I don't think I would have been scarred for life if I'd seen his penis in a natural context.
Let's all lighten up and quit judging ourselves by the lives of celebrities (and busybodies).

Why give NASA a pass?
[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]NASA a big ol' government bureaucracy like all the others. While there are some advantages in that it has, in the past, had a clear mission, it's still just as subject to the laws of economics as any other.
