The physical injuries are easy to diagnose, the mental symptoms go untreated. I see hundreds of returning troops with "problems sleeping." These sleeping problems are never fully worked-up, they are never given a "profile", they are marked "fit-for-duty."
Sleep deprived GI's in a combat zone, in a brittle mental state are explosive devices waiting to go off. Like an IED, they can damage anyone: themselves, their buddies or Iraq civilians.
Why would a Commander want to take a chance...everyone wants a "top-block" evaluations for the next promotion board. Who cares about a few dead or crazy privates, the Commander-in-Chief doesn't.
You can't make general if your unit readiness isn't inflated. This brigade commander, like the Commander-in-Chief, will do anything he can to make the numbers look good.
