Gee, Amos. In the time it took you to read the essay and write a bitchy post, you could have personally flown to Iraq and ended the war by now! You should feel terrible for not saving the world when you had a chance.

WoW

Okay, I've never played it because I already have enough time consuming hobbies, and I know I'd take to it like crack. But why is the assumption that "hot chicks" are automatically NOT into immersive videogames? I know plenty of women who play it.

My wife absolutely loves the Final Fantasy series, and a lot of the Japanese RPG's. But I think it's less that women are inherently not into geeky stuf--it's more that, unintentionally or not, there are GIRLZ KEEEP OUT signs posted on the Geek Clubhouse as much as on the Jock locker room.

Example: I tried to get her to play God of War once, but no matter how much ingenious monster killing action was on display, she was never able to get past the opening moments of the game where Kratos was sitting in bed with 2 topless women, for no apparent reason other than a way for the game designers to say "hey dude, here's some hot chicks for all us boys to ogle."

Geeking Out

Del Toro is the perfect film maker for certain kinds of genre movies--I've been wishing fervently that he'd finally get to make his long threatened adaptation of Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness with his increased Pan's Labyrinth clout. No such luck; the studios are still uninterested.

Instead we get The Hobbit. While I'm sure that'll be worth watching, I'm very disappointed.

I'm also hoping that someday Del Toro will do Dr. Strange--now THAT could be a cool adaptation.

Salon Should Post a Rebuttal

Since this is clearly a grudge match, I request that Salon solicit a counterpoint essay by PZ Myers. Just to be, you know, truly fair and balanced about the thing, and not transparently one sided like Fox News.

Comforting Familiarity

It's nice to know that sensible, realistic sexual attitudes can endure even with the onslaught of the new puritanism. High school kids have been put through the wringer in the decades since I graduated, with all of the abstinence nonsense, purity balls, and gross out exercises with the chewed up wads of gum. But Tracy's story is very similar to what I went through in my college and 20-something years.

It's only the media and opportunistic self-marketing authors who make a big deal about the so-called hookup generation Going Too Far. To those of us who are honest about it, it's nothing new or outrageous.

@ the2nddoctor?

"I plan to have my teenage sons read this article.

Then I plan to tell them: this woman is a predator. Learn to recognize her if you can. I have taught you that sex and commitment go together, and to most people, they do.

Honestly, what a horrible woman."

Methinks you protest too much. Intentional or not, this reminds me of so many MRA screeds, it's like a cut and paste. "Oh noes, who will protect the innocent boyz from those evil grrls?"

Have you completely forgotten about what being a teenage boy is like? Trust me. They're not as innocent as you think they are.

You've done the best you can by telling your teenage sons about the potential pitfalls of sex, and to treat people with respect. They've done their best to absorb those lessons. But they aren't little hothouse flowers that are going to wilt at the first moment they encounter a girl that enjoys Teh Sex. It might freak them out a bit more if they have this dichotomy between the flowery talk they get at home vs. the dangerous thorns of sex in their real lives--but they know girls like Tracy Clarke-Flory.

And they're probably praying to meet someone like her.

@ Bitter Scribe

Calling China a wretched ant colony goes over the line from criticizing their gov't to out and out racism. Shame on you.

Doesn't Matter

"She can't catch up to Biden's 35 years of knowledge and experience in a few weeks. She's not particulary well educated either."

This doesn't matter. I'm worried, the more everyone points out the truth about Palin, the lower the bar is set for her performance. Right now, all she needs to do in a debate is be able to say 1 or 2 talking points right, and the MSM will declare her the winner by "exceeding expectations."

I hope more pundits keep praising her to the roof, just to keep expectations up.

Why is contempt only a one way road?

wir0monkey: "At the same time, I share much of Palin's background, and watching her being attacked for her personality, clothes, and family makes me cringe. Why should any voter believe Obama supporters when they say that they're going to help white, working class voters? Everything Obama's true believers say about this demographic drips with contempt for working class whites."

Palin is being attacked about her appearance and personality because those are the things that she is being praised for by the extreme right. If issues mattered at all in this election, we wouldn't be having this conversation. And with all this talk about the so-called contempt Obama supporters have for working class whites, why is OK for media proxies of those working class whites to drip scorn on urban dwelling Americans? Would you really, really vote for someone that only agrees with 20% of your issues, just because you feel looked down on by straw metrosexuals? If that's the case, then you never really cared about issues.

Dude

On right wing board, something like McNasty would be tea and cakes compared to the bottom dwellers there. I'm so sick of this false equivalencies being pushed by Freeper Nation.
